PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, May 1, 1990 -- 17 Millar Lights to present Annie The Millar Lights are get- ting ready for the "bigone." "Annie" the musical, based on the book and cartoon "Little Orphan Annie" will be coming to the Town Hall 1873 later this month for seven performances. The Millar Lights is a thea- tre group made up entirely of children (ages 9-16) from Port Perry and area. Annie will be the third pro- duction for this talented group" of young people, but the first at- tempt at a full-length musical show. A year ago, the group staged SRO (Standing Room Only) which featured a variety of songs from many popular mu- sicals. Last December, they were on stage with "A Child's Christ- mas in Wales," based on the sto- ry by Dylan Thomas. And now it's "Annie." There are 34 children involved in this production under the musical direction of Tom and Catherine Millar, with stage direction by Nina Foxall and Lynn Relf. . Melissa Kroonenberg plays the role of Annie, the precocious little orphan girl who makes her way from the orphanage to the mansion of Oliver Warbucks, played by Brad Goreski. Other lead roles are Van- nessa Mumford as Miss Hanni- gan; Karen Mahoney as Lily; and Kent Jamieson as Rooster Hannigan. All of these young actors have been deeply involved in previous Millar Lights produc- tion, and perhaps can even be considered "veterans" of the stage at Town Hall 1873. ., The production features t some humourous moments and dramatics, and of course, lots of music. The story of Annie is a mar- vellous one, bigger than life ac- tually, set in the dark days of the Great Depression. Warbucks, the perfect cari- cature of the millionaire-tycoon whose only interest is making money and more money, de- cides his public image would be enhanced if he took an orphan into his mansion for a week or 80. And you can guess what or- phan he selects, Annie, the youngster with the mop of curly, red hair. For the Millar Lights, this is their first "big budget" pro- duction. The royalties alone are $250 (US) for each of the seven shows. Most of the parents of the 'kids are helping out with this show, which is produced by Kar- en Burns.
