EN NIN AEH 5 EE aa a ar aii le Mt nh ---- Bw 14 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, May 1, 1990 (from page 6) add the going inflation rate of six per cent, and then add in the rate for the assessment growth in the Region which in theory should not increase taxes for existing owners? Would the quality of education suffer? Would there be a deterioration on a day-to-day classroom basis? Perhaps. And perhaps, when parents start to voice their complaints, the ard will have to say explicitly that with a ceiling on the num- ber of dollars available, some programs or staff or both may have to go. Some new schools may not get built. More stu- dents may spend their school days in a portable. Nobody would like to see this happen. But most home- owners can't continue to absorb 14 per cent tax hikes, either. Something eventually has to give. It is not enough for trustees simply to condemn the prov- ince for the grant roll-backs, then throw their hands in the air and bring down a budget that includes a double-digit hike in property taxes. Instead of taking a paring knife in an effort to trim a few dollars here and there, trustees should be taking a chain saw to nose budget increases, and face the economic realities of 1990.
