Program for children of substance abusers The Pinewood Centre will be receiving funding to start a pre- vention project for children of substance abusers. Al Furlong, MPP for Durham Centre made the announce- ment on behalf of the Honora- ble Ken Black, the minister re- sponsible for the Provincial Anti-Drug Program. He announced that $99,860 has been set aside for the Oshawa based prevention pro- ject. The Pinewood Centre of Oshawa General Hospital will receive funding over two years to design, test and evaluate a prevention program aimed at four to 12-year-olds. The pro- gram will provide education, problem- solving, and skills de- velopment, for about 160 chil- dren over a two-year period. Pinewood Centre is one of 35 community groups from across Ontario selected to receive a to- tal of $1.6 million in grants as part of the $3 million Commu- nities Grants Program. The program was established last November, and it seeks to promote innovative, communi- based programs to reduce the illegal use of drugs. Mr. Furlong also stated that one of the highest risk popula- tions are the children of par- ents who abuse substances. And that this community based program will focus on reducing the risks for these children and helping them to choose healthy, drug-free lifestyles. The Provincial Anti-Drug Secretariat is accepting appli- cations for a second round of grants under the program, to be announced later this year. Interested community groups should contact the Pro- vincial Anti-Drug Secretariat, 12th floor, 700 Bay Street, To- ronto, M5G 176. The deadline for applications is May 31, 1990.
