Musical opens Thursday In the surging '60's, when rebellious youth of the Western world were straining against what they perceived was a too restrictive and hostile world, when 'flower power' was raised and praised as the path to peace and universal goodwill, albeit through riotous protests, it was only natural that religion and the very nature of its Christian soul, the figure of Jesus Christ, should also be called into question. "You -- who are you? Who are you to say that you are the Christ?!" Andrew Lloyd Webber, just beginning his illustrious com- posing career, and his lyricist Tim Rice had the answer, and their inspiration for this early musical work "Jesus Christ -- Super - Star" -- A Super Human -- that's who. This seminal musical, with its throbbing rock and reggae rhythmns, the new electronic synthesized accom- paniment and timeless lyrics voicing the concerns of humanity for all ages -- "'I don't like what I see; all I ask is that you listen to VALMED $ HEALTH SERVICES INC. Foot Care Services in Your Home { (416) 433-1494 me...I am frightened by the crowd...it was beautiful but now 1's sour...tell me what's happen- ing...I only want to know" -- was an immediate hit, especially with the young. The youth could now identify with the Passion and the Crucifixion -- and pray for the Resurrection. This Passion play, wholly in the music of their time, spoke to them, with '*heaven on their minds." They wanted to believe that "Everything' s alright;"' they shared in the Hosannas of Palm Sunday; they could strike at the evil, moneylenders (politicians) of Society, see the blood money exchanged -- and learn from Judas's increasing self-doubts. Gethsemane, with all that follow- ed, became their apotheosis. Then, in death, they could identify with Christ as he agonizingly at- tained his immortal "Superstar" status. Lloyd Webber's early detrac- tors soon realized that here was a new -- and successful -- way of bringing Christ's story to a whole WHO ARE THE BAHA'IS? special time on earth. The message is delivered entire- ly in music, each familiar biblical character Judas, Mary Magdalene, Caiaphas, Simon, Pontius Pilate, a comic Herod (the only musical piece not at- tributed to Webber), Peter, and Christ himself -- etched in un- forgettable operatic fashion. In 1969 Christ's Passion spoke anew to a generation of believers -- as it speaks again here and now, in 1990. "Jesus Christ -- who are you? What have you sacrificed?" And into His Father's hands is commended His Spirit -- redemp- tion again for the good of all mankind. Come with us to Gethsemane.
