14 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, April 17, 1990 Thirteen-year-old Lisa Pere- man will be off to Windsor next month to compete in the Cana- da-Wide Science Fair. Lisa, a Grade 8 student at RH. Cornish Public School earned the right to go to the Canada-wide fair after claim- ing the gold medal at the Re- gional Science Fair. Lisa's physics praject won a $200 General Motors cash award, along with the Direc- tor's Award, and an additional $100 for the best junior project at the fair. Lisa also won the gold medal in the physics divi- sion of the R.H. Eornish Sci- snips Fair. i8a's winning project is enti- tled "Natural Colour", in which she performed three experi- ments. "I became interested in the topic last year, and decided to do it again, and go more in depth," she said. _ The focus of her Grade 7 pro- Ject was if different parts of the plant produce dye in cloth. This- year Lisa took her experiments a few steps further, and she said the extra experiments she performed this year are prob- ably what gave her the win. "Iwas hoping to win at the re- gional fair, but I was really sur- prised about going on to the Canada-wide Fair." she said. "It is going to be tough com- petition, and very different. 1 will do the best that I can, and I am happy that I got this far," she said. Lisa is the only student from the Port Perry area, who earned the right to travel to Windsor later this month. The fair will be held on May 13-19. Lisa stated that Science is a strong subject for her in school, and she is going to continue to do Science Fair projects throughout her High School years. "I really like trying exper- iements," she said. The fact that Lisa enjoys sci- ence and trying experiments may be a benefit to her, as Lisa stated she wishes to be a veteri- narian later in life. Srs. Pot Luck Dinner draws big crowd . Senior Citizens Club 101 met Wednesday, April 11 at the Lat- cham Centre. The meeting open- ed with singing O'Canada. Presi- dent Bill Harper extended a welcome to everyone and welcomed 2 new members to our Club. In the absence of Secretary Mary Cannon, Ann Van Es read the minutes of the last meeting which was accepted as read. Norm Caswell is home from the South and gave the Treasurers Report. Thank you to Harold Cor- nish who filled in for Norm while he was away. A short business discussion was held and Min and Jim Martin have been busy in booking some trips for us in the summer. On May 29th, a Niagara Falls trips is planned. It includes a visit to a perfum factory, lunch and a stop at Wrights Winery on the way home. On June 7th, a bus will leave at 11 a.m. for the Woodbine Races and in Sept. it is off to Vermont to enjoy the colors. Doris Grierson reported Line Dancing is going well and will continue until the end of May. The application forms for the Sr. Games this summer are available at the Club if anyone is interested in joining. Sorry, I "goofed" last meeting, the Citizens Choir will be singing at Seagrave Church, April 22, 9:30 a.m.. Thank you to the Entertain- ment Committee for decorating the Hall for Easter, and Doris an- nounced there will be a Penny Bingo at the next meeting, so bring your penny's. A lovely photo of C "~~ Bright was given to the cluk Jrant and it will be hung at the Latcham Centre in memory of Carrie who was a faithful member for many years. Get will wishes to our members who are ill, Marguerite, Bernice and others who were not able to join us this week. Winners of the lucky draw were Grant Bright, Marguerite Beacock, Marg Cornish, Dorothy Moore and Eileen Owens. The meeting closed with prayer. Later the Line Dancers entertained with a few dances before tea was served. Approx- imately 80 people enjoyed the delicious Pot Luck supper. After supper, the members were enter- tained with an Easter Hat Parade. It was a huge success and enjoyed by everyone. Thirty- two ladies modeled the Bonnets that they had made, accompanied by some men who serenaded them. An enjoyable evening end- ed until next month.
