They would up with 43 points to edge out the Scott Howey rink by a single point. Petites win silver medal at regional championship The Port Perry Petites played their way through 5 hard-fought games this weekend on their way to the Silver Medal in the Regional Championship games. They defeated Ajax, Whitby, and Lindsay before the final game in which they met Pickering, a well- disciplined and talented group of girls. The Port Petites played hard, and proved to all that they were able to make the transition from Petite C to Petite B with success. The girls were delighted to find that the luck of the draw gave them a schedule which made it necessary for them to miss school on Friday. Their first game against Whitby was at 11:00 a.m., and the second against Pickering was at 3:00. Between games, the coaches took the girls out for a Pizza Party - a great way to keep up team spirit and energy! In the game against Whitby, the Port team came out flying, and the line of Brandy, Michelle and Cara took the first shot of the game after only 30 seconds. The second shot came quickly and resulted in a goal by Joan assisted by Lynda. Before the period was over, Joan and Brandy had each scored again with a mid-game tal- ly of 3-1. In the second period, Whitby was ready for Port's ag- gressive play and began to press hard. They scored three times and threatened on many occa- sions, but Katie, in goal, was sharp and hard to beat. Brandy put one in the net early in the period, but the score was tied at 4 apiece at the 2 minute mark. Brandy scored quickly after Whit- by's tying goal, and the power line of Brandy, Lynda and Joan with help from Melissa P. and Shona were able to fight off Whitby's determined efforts. The final score was 5-4 for Port Perry. The game against Pickering was filled with penalties and miles of skating. Port Perry did well to keep the score at 4-1 against this excellent team. The defense was consistent, with ex- cellent effort from Jenny and Melissa D.7Lee-anne and Sheila. Ports only goal of the game was a trick shot from Dana which completely fooled the goalie. The effort of the team in this match was commented on by the fans. Saturday noon found the team back in Oakwood, playing against their friendly rivals, Lindsay. This time it was all red and white as the score board lit up 9 times for Port Perry, and only 3 times for Lindsay. Brandy got 4 goals and 1 assist, Lynda got 3 goals, Cara got 2 goals and 2 assists, Joan had 3 assist, Michelle, Man- dy, and Melissa D. each received 1 assist. Most of the girls should have been on this score sheet, as it was a team effort with many completed passes not recognized 'by the refs. The final score was 9-3 for Port Perry. * Saturday night at 7:00 the team met Ajax. After only 7 seconds of play, Port found itself short a player, and Ajax scored a powerplay goal. Not a nice way to start a game, but Bruton's Petites fought back and scored 4 unanswered goals in the first period. If it were not for Katie's excellent goalie skills, the second period would have been a great one for Ajax. They took many shots on net, and had a sure goal on a break-away, which would have tied the game. 5-4 for Port Perry lit up the scoreboard at the end of the match. Lynda scored 3 times, Brandy 2 times. Assists went to Joan, Michelle, Dana, Jenny, and Natasha. The Championship game was played on Sunday at 5:00 in Oakwood, and Port Perry was determined to give Pickering the game of its life. With the neon green laces (donated by Dana), and the power pellets (donated by Melissa D. and Dad) how could they lose? They did, but not without a great effort. An unusually large number of penalties was called, with a total of 32 minutes spent short-handed by one team or the other. Port Perry received 10 of these penalties, and could not get their high-energy game going because of the many stops. However, Brandy managed to score 3 times, assisted by Natasha, Cara, and Shona. The final score was Port Perry 3, Pickering 7. Coach Harris, Payne, and Anderson want to thank the team for their excellent effort and spirit throughout the weekend. Wednes- day night at 6:30 in Harmon Park is the last game of the year, but perhaps the most important one. Port Perry will play Whitby for the League Championship. The girls hope to bring home the ban- ner for all their fans to admire! Pineridge Atom Bs win season finale 2-0 The Pineridge Atom B's wrap- ped up their season at the Buffalo Pepsi tournament. They met Bradford in game 1 and Wasaga in game 2. They played good strong hockey but couldn't get on the board. In the 3rd game they played the Buffalo Hornets and came out on top 2-0. Early in the first period Derek Leeming, Matt Phillips and Jason Hopkins made a great pass- ing play. Matt took the first shot and Jason picked up the rebound and put it over the goalie. With 3 minutes left in the second, Chris Drury passed it up to Shane Nor- ton for a breakaway. Shane took the shot and Danny Robinson was there for the rebound and put it in. Great game, guys. MVP's were chosen for each game. Matt Phillips played a strong game against Bradford. Paul Shrigley earned the award in the 2nd game and Jamie Trick and Paul Shrigley shared the shutout between the pipes against Buffalo. Congratulations to these guys. From all the players and parents of the Atom B's we extend our appreciation to the guys behind the bench for their time and patience with the boys. A big thanks to Bill Hopkins, Walter Drury, Gary Smith and Larry Shrigley. The boys had fun, learn- ed a lot and came a long way. IF YOUR AD WAS HERE Over 20,000 people could have read it this week.
