Kinsmen need donors for blood clinic this Thursday Anyone wishing to give the gift of life, is encouraged to come out to the Blood Donor Clinic at the Kinsmen Hall, April 12, The Clinic is sponsored by the Kinsmen, and Kinettes of Port Perry. They hold the clinic twice a year, and are hoping for another successful turn out. One clinic is organized by the Kinettes, and one by the Kins- men, with each helping the oth- er with anything they can. In past years the clinic has resulted in between 180 and 200 pints of blood: Paul Cook, president of the Kinsmen Club ed of Port Perry states that 200 pints is good for a community of this size, and that Red Crossis happy with the amount donat- e "We are always hoping to get more blood, our goal this year is to raise over 200 pints," he add- For every pint of blood given the Kinsmen and Kinettes will donate $1 to the Port Perry Community Memorial Hospital Building Fund. 2, Mr. Cook added that the Red Cross has a list of donors with raré blood types and are calling these donors to come to the clin- Scugog Clean-up Week campaign set for May "Together we can really clean- up this town"' is the theme of 1990 Pitch-In Week. The one week campaign, May 7-13, promotes recycling and proper waste disposal as two ways to manage waste while stressing the need for Canadians to reduce and re-use as the first two steps in solving our waste disposal and generation problems. A major environmental clean- up of Scugog Township will be undertaken by a number of our community groups. Already the 1st Port Perry Brownies and Pathfinders, the 2nd Port Perry Guides and Pathfinders, Hope Christian School and S.A. Cawker School as well as the Port Perry United Church Youth Group have chosen Clean-up Locations and committed themselves towards cleaning up our community's en- vironment. It is hoped other groups, organizations and schools will respond to the call to par- ticipate in this Township-wide project (if you haven't been ask- ed - Volunteer). Individual homeowners can also become involved in this Clean-up Campaign. Sand that has accumulated on boulevards and sidewalks over the winter can be swept to curb-side so as Township Works crews can pick it up. You can go for an 'Ecology Walk" along any street or road- side and pick-up the accumulated litter, bottles and cans. Recycle as many materials as possible. The Township of Scugog Parks Dept. while helping to co-ordinate this project is also committed to the Pitch-In campaign. Recycling containers will be placed in Palmer Park this summer so as cans and bottles will not end up in landfill sites. Over 100 trees will be planted in area parks in late April through a joint effort of KRCA and the Township. Scugog Township is also attempting to make composters available at cost to residents through a Ministry of the Environment Pro- gram (due to demand for these units and their short supply this program may be delayed). More than 2.3 million Cana- dians participated in Pitch-In week in 1989. But for anyone with a rare blood type who is not registered with the Red Cross, or is new to the area, they would like to see these people come out on Thursday. The Kinsmen and Kinettes have held the clinic at different locations before, one being the high school, but they feel this is a much better location. It was tried at the school but due to age restrictions (a donor must be 18 to give blood, or have par- ents consent), there were not many donors, and wasof noreal benefit to hold it there. He said that the Red Cross feels this is a good location, and the availability of refrigeration is also an asset. The clinic will be run strictly by volunteers from the Kin- ettes, and Kinsmen along with official workers from the Red Cross. The Clinic will take place on Thursday April 12, at the Kins- men Hall on Lilla Street be- tween 12 noon, and 8 p.m. There will be coffee, dough- nuts, and juice available for all donors.
