22 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, March 20, 1990 The Goreski Insulation Bantam No. I's, season has come to a halt on a rather sour note as they have fallen to a squad from East Gwillimbury in 3 games, they are finished in the playoffs. The team obviously did not play up to par as East Gwillimbury outplayed the Turtles in all 3 games. Even though the scores were close at 5-4, 5-4, and 4-3 the Port Perrians never had the breaks in this series and it just wasn't to be for the boys in red & white. No we're not talking about the Red Wings were talkin' the heart and soul of the Insulators. Even though Blades and his boys held the advantage as Blades won the coin toss for the next two home games the team played rather well despite having about as many breaks as the Quebec No- deeks. Game No. 2, held at the Memorial Arena in Port Perry on March 12th was doomed to be a slow start for the Turtles as they forgot about the disciplined game plan and intentions of meditating in the penalty box. Penalty boxes and good hockey do not mix as Port found out as they were down 5-0 before you could say "As Great As Gretzky." Port got rolling in the 2nd as they scored 4 goals to get back in it, it wasn't enough though as Port fell two bricks short of a load and lost 5-4. Scoring Port Perry's goals in "this game were Parry from Laird and McBride, Parry from J. Cochrane, McBride from Traynor and Jody, and McBride from Logan and Pashley. Hutchinson started this hockey game and didn't get much help OF DURHAM D) Seeing is believing ... ARCHITECTURE - LANDSCAPING RENOVATIONS See your design ideas in photo realistic detail first. Coach Wilbur was not pleased with our performance on this night so he called a workout for Wednesday evening, two nights later to get us mentally prepared. Skating and shooting were the main concerns at this practise and the whole team worked hard in this practise and looked good out there. The third game of this series was played last Friday evening at the Memorial Arena and more of the same happened. Port would get the momentum and then they would take a stupid penalty and the East would score and capitalize on Port's mental mistake. Port outplayed the Guillimsters most of the game and they never really got the breaks or bounces in this game when a scoring chance would spring up. Scoring Port's goals were Bricknell from G. Cochrane and Laird, Bricknell from Parry and J. Cochrane and Moase from Logan and McBride. Hutchinson started this en- counter and played well despite the loss. A2B Rich! Thanks to Willets for the back-up. It is now time to thank many people on the Insulator staff for their hard work over the course of the season. We'll start with the goaltending coach Warren Nicholishen and the great job he did with the goalies working them vigorously at practise to get them playing up to N.H.L. standards. Lee 'Huggy' the man who helped out the defense and also looked after the wounded was an inspiration to us all with his splen- did goatee. It brought up a laugh here and there over the season. Now what the people have been waiting for, the man of the year in Coach Todd "Blades" Wilbur. This guy is the greatest Coach since microwavable popcorn. Coach it would probably be to Rich Dudlay of the Sabres. Both coaches love to have fun and they both like to hollar from the bench when the referee gets on their nerves. Anyway, Blades, we all agreed that we learned some new things this year and we all had a helluva mountain of fun with you this season. Thanks. We cannot forget Lisa (Huggies main squeeze), Carolyn, Todd's sweetheart and of course wife and to all the parents and fans - thanks a trillion for your superb support. How can we forget Big Bobbie Clobber otherwise known as Bob e playoffs Vander Slagt. Thanks Bob for keeping the stats all season for the team. It was interesting to look at them Bob! The team totalled up 1,416 take-outs, 1,100 penalty minutes and they gathered up 660 points in 61 games thats4.1 goals a game and 6.7 assists a game. The team showed great poten- tial for Coach Wilbur, it's too bad the squad couldn't have pulled a rabbit out of a hat in the playoffs. Pineridge Atoms enjoy fine round-robin series The Pineridge Atom team com- pleted the round-robin series with Orono, Uxbridge, and Cobourg over the past weekend. Their ef- forts proved successful, by going undefeated with six straight wins. The fourth win was last Thurs- day, as the boys took on Cobourg at the Port Arena. Pineridge got on the board early as Kevin Hobbs picked up the loose puck out in front and drilled it home. Assists to Shane Norton and Kevin Cochrane. Port added one more in the first with Jason Hopkins scoring from Matt Phillips and Justin Halligan. Cobourg came back with one in the second, but Port sealed the victory with two in the third for a 4-1 win. Third period goals were by Derek Leeming assists to Kevin Hobbs and Bobby Cracknell and Kevin Hobbs unassisted. Our superb netminder for this game was Paul Shrigley with some fine saves. On Friday Port entertained Ux- bridge for the fifth game, and they showed no mercy as they came out on top 10-0. Uxbridge with only eight skaters put up a brave fight, and their goaltender was outstanding despite the high score. . The goal parade was led by Shane Norton 3 goals, Matt Phillips 3 goals, 2 assists, Derek Leeming 2 goals, 1 assist, Jason Hopkins 1 goal, 3 assists, and Kevin Hobbs 1 goal, 2 assists. Strong performances by Kevin Cochrane with 3 assists and Chris Drury 2 assists, single assists to Trevor Smith and Justin Halligan. Jamie Trick went the distance for the shut-out. For the final game of the series, Port travelled to Uxbridge on Sunday. Once again Port dominated the game as they skated to a 9-2 win. This enabled Port to collect the championship trophy. M.V.P. for the series overall went to Matt Phillips. Goalscorers for the game were Kevin Cochrane 2 goals, 1 assist, Matt Phillips 2 goals, 2 assists, Chris Drury 2 goals, Jason Hopkins 1 goal, 1 assist and singles to Justin Halligan and Derek Leeming, Robert Gracie chipped in with three assists with single assists to Shane Norton, Trevor Smith, Kevin Hobbs and Mike Morden. Strong performances by all the members of this team have put together a winning combination, we wish the players and coaches a successful weekend in Buffalo March 31st. Good luck everyone.
