| f | Letters io the editor Time of the year for "flower wars" To the Editor: It's war on the streets of Port Perry! That's right folks, and you'd better believe it! Once again it is coming to that time of year when we will see our streets, street corners, and many other locations in town bombard- ed with flower vendors, only this year there will be even more join- ing in the battle of the blossoms. You see, the new recruits on the streets this year will be one of your hardworking, loyal, local flowerships. Yes, that's correct! Even though we do not want to conduct our business in such a manner, we feel we have no choice but to join the battle on the streets for the welfare of our business. - Many people may think, oh, a few flower vendors on our streets aren't going to hurt our local business people, BUT IT DOES! You see, this is a small town, and if we can't rely on our town council and other local businesses to lend support to each other so that we can all conduct business in a professional manner, who can we rely on, and why bother operating our business in a per- sonal and professional manner, (which we really strive to give to our community and all our customers not only in the heat of summer but year round) if we are all allowed to just take to the streets! This isn't just a matter over flowers, but it is about the con- cern over how many people are 'we going to allow to invade our streets - and corners every weekend (most of whom are not residents or business people from our community), selling whatever they please whether it affects our business or yours (not to mention jobs as well for those whom we employ in this community). Could you imagine what the streets of Port Perry would look like if this were to happen, which may not be so far fetched. Just think, you could buy your lunch on the street or in the park from one of the many hot dog vendors or you could stop at one corner for your fruits and vegetables, another for your flowers, another for a painting or handmade jewellery or another for T-shirts and so the list could go on affec- ting many businesses and local jobs for our young people and others. This town could turn into a sum- mertime flea market! There would be no need to keep our Chemicals & lawn care (From page 8) which means you can apply safer with no fear of contaminating the environment. Due to extreme sensitivities to chemicals we have had to alert our neighbours to the fact that chemicals applications on their lawns could be life threatening in my situation. Fortunately everyone we have approached has been most co-operative and have opted to use alternative methods - including the farmer whose corn field backs onto our property. If everyone would con- sider this we would have a healthier world. Pam Beadle, Prince Albert shops open for the "shoppers,'" we could close our doors & join the flea bargaining on the streets. Is this what we've worked so hard for in our beautiful town with all our beautifying projects and so on that we so proudly talk about, or does this town and council just look the other way and hope it will all just work itself out? If that's the case, it's wrong, because this year the street war is going to escalate, if not only to bring atten- tien to this matter but also because we have no alternative to protect our jobs, our business and the jobs of those of whom we employ. If people would rather shop on the sides of the roads and street corners, then this year we will be there to serve you as well. I sincerely hope the war won't last long, (it can get cold and lone- ly out there) I'd rather come home to serve you and look after your needs personally and professionally. Sincerely Yours V.
