Port Perry Legion Pee Wee A's travelled to the shore of Lake Huron Friday to begin play in the Goderich Young Canada Tourna- ment. They opened up against Lindsay and, still a little foggy from the trip, started slowly. Lindsay took a 1-0 lead late in the first on the powerplay but, less than a min. later, Chad Kearns turned in a strong penal- ty killing effort. After several good chances he clicked on a Jeremy Norton pass in the face off circle to fire the tying goal. Then early in the second, Chad teamed up with Joe Broadworth to set up a goal for Sean Ellis on a Lindsay penalty. It was a night for special teams, as Scott Heasman and Sean set up Joe for a tip-in on another powerplay. Illness forced Lindsay to dress a skater in goal for the third period, and his team work- ed very hard in his support. With less than two minutes left another extra-man goal gave Lindsay life, but Chad picked up his second in the last minute on a pass from Craig Laird to clinch a 4-2 win. Saturday afternoon, the Legionaires picked up pace slight- ly in a tough defensive game with Collingwood. Everybody carried their own end, and just when it seemed the game might end 0-0, Chad circled the net and found Sean open in front. Sean knows where it goes and Port had a 1-0 victory. The defensive effort was vital, as Port "earned' four penalties in less than two minutes early in the third period and played two men short forever. Mike Pashley and Steve Gilbert were solid in net to share the shutout. That win put the Legionaires in the semi-final against a hustling team from Petrolia. Jeremy got things rolling with a nice unassisted effort early in the game. Petrolia tied it up, then just before the second period ended they potted two in 7 seconds to take a 3-1 lead to the dressing room. There was a gut check dur- ing intermission, but when Petrolia added to their lead 18 seconds into the third, Port ap- peared dead in the water. As their fans know, there are no faint hearts on this team. With Chad gone for repairs, a shorten- ed lineup dug as deep as was nec- essary. Neil Mueller gave them Y floor hockey Senior There was a wild floor hockey game played at R.H. Cornish on Monday March 5. Manvers chalked up 7 goals before Port was finally able to count. With 7 minutes left in the third period, a scramble in front of the Manvers goalie resulted in Brent Harper starting us off. Assists to Jeremy Geer and Daryl Bourgeois. Ten seconds later, Daryl Bourgeois carried the puck down and did a neat backhander into the net with the assists going to Jeremy Geer. Manvers scored once more. This weekend our guys are heading off to North Bay for a tournament. Good luck team. Atom HL playoff The playoffs got underway on Saturday with Gord Lewis defeating Lake Scugog Lumber 6-1. Lake Scugog got on the board first as Kristan Wootten scored assisted by Darrel Holtby. Gord Lewis then scored 6 unanswered goals, three of them by Brandon Hammond, two by Jeremy Gibson and one by Scott Heffern. Scott also pitched in with 3 assists while Jay Strickert add- ed two. Matt Baxter, Gavin Bax- ter, Matt Grills and Mike Turn- bull all added one assist. The scoring for Lewis was every skater but 1 each picked up at least one point. This was the only game of the day due to one team being out of town for a tournament. They will make up this game next Saturday at 12:25 p.m. RONALD D. BRIDGEWATER, Ba. Lis. Craig fanned the spark into flames with 4:23 left when he con- verted a play from Sean and Dave Bourgeios. Port was a man short when Jay King made an outlet pass to Joe. Joe turned on all the jets and tucked one inside the far post to call Petrolia's "Bluffs" and send the game into overtime. You might say things just PORT PERRY STAR - TUESDAY, MARCH 13, 1990 - 7A Legion wins berth in Goderich tourney final snowballed from there and since it was already late and a long trip ahead, Port apparently decided shorter was better. They allowed Petrolia one rush, out of courtesy, then Jeremy picked up the puck and started the finest play you may ever see. Everybody on the ice was flying and it went from Jer to Sean over center, to Joe on the left, then Sean and Joe's pass arrived at the crease at once and we all know what that means. It means Port came home 5-4 win- ners in their greatest comeback and Coaches Geer and Teno have had their contracts extended another week. Next Saturday, the Legionaires will face Mount Forest in the championship game in Goderich at 2:00 p.m. and we highly recom- mend heart pills, or at least a complete physical, for all fans. from your 15 | meTER FORD'LINCOLN-MERCURY DEALER The "Truck Specialists" * 1000 S Oy IN fixed A.P.R.
