The Immaculate Conception Catholic School Senior Girls basketball team won the Dur- ham East Championships, and brought home the school's first pennant. Last Monday the pirls trav- elled to Oshawa to play in the first tournament in which they won four games. From there they went on to South Oshawa to meet the win- ner of that tournament. In this match Port Perry de- feated Corpus Christi School, to bring home the Durham East Championship Pennant. This win enabled the girls to go on to the Regional finals, where they met teams from Central and West Durham. Durham East title for Senior girls squad The games in the Durham East championships were all 15 minutes halfs, and the Region- al games only 10 minute halfs. In the Regional tournament the girls won two games, which put them in a tie for first place with a team from St. Isaac Jogues School in Ajax. The two teams competed in a tie-breaker match, in which the Port Perry squad went down in defeat losing by only one point, the final score being 6-5. The Junior Boy's Basketball team hosted a round robin tour- nament on Wednesday. The boy's are now out of ac- tion after losing to St. Joseph's School, and to a team from St. Christopher. Local shooters win in free throw event Nerves of steel and a very steady eye were displayed by two students from R.H. Cornish over the weekend as they fin- ished first in the Regional finals of the Knights of Columbus Bas- ketball Free Throw competi- tions held in Toronto. Misty Garvock calmly sank 21 of 26 free throw attempts to win the 13-year old girls divi- sion, and Scott Peters took top honours in the 11-year old boys category as he "swished" home 19 of 26 free throws from the foul line. A third Cornish student, Dana McCullough finished just one basket off first place in her class, but in a shoot-off had to settle for third overall. The scores by Misty and Scott will be tabulatéd by the Knights of Columbus to deter- mine provincial, national and international winners. Misty, Scott and Dana ad- vanced to the Toronto Regional finals after placing first in com- petitions held Feb. 26 in Picker- ing against students from Ajax- Pickering and Whitby. Three other Scugog stu- dents, Darryl McEnaney, Melis- sa Gouldburn and Scott Pre- chitko placed second in their age groups at the playdowns in Pickering. This free-throw competi- tion was sponsored in Scugog by the Immaculate Conception Knights of Columbus Council 8951 and Pineridge Sports of Port Perry. Congratulations to Misty , Scott and Dana for their fine shooting against tough competi- tion and to all the Scugog stu- dents who took part in this event.
