4 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, March 6, 1990 Elizabeth Fulford leaving Scugog for new position After 12 years as the only administrator Scugog Commu- nity Care has ever had, Eliza- beth Fulford is leaving to be- come executive director of the Durham Region Community Care in Whitby. The Scugog organization expects to have a new adminis- trator hired by the time Mrs. Fulford leaves April 1. She told the Star last week she really wasn't looking to make a change, but when the opportunity came up with the Regional Office, she applied, went through the interviews and landed the position. Though she is going to deeply miss all the people served by Scugog Community Care and the many volunteers who make the programs work, she's looking forward to the challenges of her new position . And since Durham Com- munity Care is the umbrella or- ganization for the seven local of- fices, including Scugog throughout Durham, she ex- pects to retain some contact with the people in this commu- njty. Community Care provides a wide range of services and as- sistance to people of all ages, though 85 per cent of those who use the services are over 76 vears of age. These services include transportation to local and out- of-town medical appointments, transportation locally for shop- ping or personal business; Meals on Wheels; foot care clin- ics three times each month; luncheon dates in which a vol- unteer drives a person to lunch and social hour at a church; grass cutting and yard clean- up; daily phone calls and home visits to shut-ins. Also, Community Care op- erates Information Scugog, and last year alone, fielded some 1800 phone calls from people looking for groups, organiza- tions and services that are available in the Township. The organization receives 70 per cent of its budget from the provincial government and the remainder from donations and fund-raising efforts. But like all organizations that rely heavily on the prov- ince for money, there is some uncertainty these days. "We just don't know at this time how the budgets (federal and provincial) are going to im- pact us," she explained. Looking back on her 12 years with Scugog Community Care, Mrs. Fulford said it's been the people (clients and volun- teers) who have been most im- portant. "] get so attached to these people. It seems we are just like a big extended family," she said. Mrs. Fulford believes that people should start to plan for their senior years or for the time when they may need the sup- portservices. "A lot of people don't like to even think about that, but it's necessary," she stated. As for the local organiza- tion, she said one thing Scugog must concentrate on this year is a drive for new volunteers. Though Mrs. Fulford is leaving the organization she was instrumental in setting up 12 years ago, she will continue to reside in Port Perry. "This is my home, I don't think I could ever consider liv- ing anywhere else." aie Aud Elizabeth Fulford, administrator of Scugog Community Care, Is leaving at the end of the month to take a new job as executive director with the Durham Region Community Care D.J.
