Household break-ins on the increase Well over half the people who break into homes are juveniles and 75 percent of them are hooked on drugs. Approximately 98 percent are amateurs and concen- trate on residential areas simply because so few ever get caught. With the degree of protection most people have, the odds are in the in- truder's favor. '""That's why in most areas residential break-ins are on the rise and will like- ly continue to rise over the next few years," says Andy Gyorffy, vice-president of . marketing for Winnipeg- "based Ramtron Pre-Entry Alarm Systems Inc. These criminals are also getting smarter and more knowledgeable. They know the strengths and weaknesses of most securi- ty systems and how to deal with them. In fact, most homeowners help them by advertising the kind of system they have by. plac- ing a sticker on a window or, door. The intruder knows that in many instances he can get in, take what he came for, and get out before the alarm activates..or the police arrive. In some in- stances, he simply bypasses the system. For the police, the pro- blem has been compounded by a large number of false -alarms. In fact, says Gyorf- fy, almost 97 percent of the alarms answered by police last year were false. This, he adds, is not likely to change unless there is a significant change in the technology of the conven- tional 'hard wire" security systems developed for the most part some half cen- tury ago for commercial and business applications.
