te et oa 4 PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, March 6, 1990 -- 15 Celebrate Al Capone's birthday Unique dinner theater coming to Islander Ever wondered what Big Al Capone might have ordered for his birthday dinner back in the "roarin" 20's" when he was tear- ing up Chicago's streets? You'll be able to find outon Friday, March 30 at the Island- er on Scugog Island. Not only will you have the chance to dine on "veal Capone, the way Al's momma used to make it," you can be part of the birthday party itself with Al and his cronies. It's all part of a unique din- ner-theatre show staged by Ken Atkinson Musical Productions, which has enjoyed huge success playing to audiences the last four years at Lagoon City's Har- bour Inn Resort near Orillia. This fast-paced production which features lots of action, plenty of songs and dance num- bers, has been put together by Ken Atkinson, a professional entertainer for two decades with a string of impressive cred- its under his belt. "The unique thing about "Al Capone's Birthday" is that we encourage audience partici- pation," he told the Star last week. Right from the moment the - audience starts arriving at the Islander, people are made to be- lieve they are part of the birth- day celebration for Al Capone. There's a pass-word to get in, the men are "frisked" at the door for weapons, and both men and women are encouraged to "dress the part" in pin-striped suits, wide brim hats, flapper dresses with lots of beads. Ken said the Islander (for- ; merly Club Annrene) on Scugog Island lends itself perfectly to this dinner-theatre show. It's a little out of the way, you have to drive there, it's just 'the kind of place Al Capone might have selected for a birth- day celebration, Ken explained. "If people in the audience let their imagination run, they could really believe they are at Big Al's secret hideaway that night," he said. Six actors play the roles of Al, his girlfriend Rosie, and cro- - nies by the names of Vinnie (that's Ken) Bonnie and Eddie. Ken Atkinson formed his own musical production compa- ny five years ago. He started in show busi- ness in 1967 in Winnipeg, moved to Toronto and worked as a dancer and choreographer. For five years, he was cho- rebgrapher for CTV variety pro- ductions such as Stars on Ice, Circus, Miss Teen and Miss Canada Pageants, and the skating special Strawberry Ice with renowned Toller Crans- ton. He has done work with the Tommy Hunter Show and Ann Murray specials, Rich Little, and the Ice Stars Hollywood Re- view for CBS TV. So, how did he come to bring the musical theatre Al Capone's Birthday to the Islander? "Some friends were at a dance there and thought it would be a great spot for the show," he said. About a month ago, he met with Islander owner Doreen Slater, checked the place out and all the pieces fell in place for the March 30 production. Ken said that if the audi- ence that night likes the show, there is a chance it will be staged again at the Islander. Al Capone's Birthday is one of three different dinner- theatre shows the company stages, and Ken is now in the process of writing a fourth. Tickets for the show and three-course dinner are $29.95 each, and are on sale now at Ir- win Smith Music in Port Perry H&R BLOCK WANTS TO SAVE YOU MONEY!
