oa -- Merchants notice decrease in walkin traffic ad PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, February 27, 1990 -- 5 Supermailboxes greeted with mixed feelings Supermailboxes are here to stay, but the community still . has a mixed reaction to the new system. Canada Post feels that the problems have settled down considerably from when the new system was first imple- mented, back in November. Most people began picking up their mail from the new 88 "con- venient" locations on Monday, November 27. Des Blacquiere, delivery spe- cialist with Canada Post said he feels things are moving smoothly now, that they have not had many complaints about the system lately. He admitted they did have a few problems with snow and ice in front of the mailboxes, but .once it was cleared away from the mailbox sights there was no "longer much of a problem. He also stated that when | speaking with Bob Walker, the postmaster at the Port Perry Post Office, that he did not ex- press any real complaints being received. The community still seems to have a few mixed feelings about the mailboxes. Joyce Stephenson, said she really likes the new system. She lives in an apartment, and likes the fact that she doesn't have to leave the building to mail a letter. Dorothy Follows said she likes the system alright now. She said she did have a problem with the lock on her mailbox not opening, but the people in- volved quickly responded and installed a new lock, and a new set of keys. Another gentleman, who wished not to be identified stat- ed he doesn't mind the new sys- tem, but he doesn't like the fact that his mail never comes at the same time everyday. He also added he misses seeing some old friends he used to run into when he picked up his mail from the local Post Office. Some downtown merchants who are located in the direct vi- cinity of the Post Office, have noticed a change in their busi- ness, since the new mailboxes have been installed. Many of these stores got ex- tra business from the people who came down to pick up their mail, and paid an impromtue visit into one of the stores. Ken Koury of Nuts About Chocolate is one merchant who has noticed a change because of the new mailboxes. He stated he has less people coming into his store, and he ex- plains it is simply because there are less people down- town. He added that his store brings in spontaneous custom- ers. If someone is downtown The Heart Facts What is a heart HEART attack? FOUNDATION | A heart attack is OF ONTARIO getting their mail they often pass by his store, and on the spur of the moment stop in to pick up a treat. Many mothers who bring their children with them downtown to pick up the mail, also would stop to pick something up for their child. Jim Lawrence, owner of I.D.A. agreed with Mr. Koury's comments stating he does not see the amount of people in his store that he used to see, when everyone picked up their mail from the Post Office. } He stated his business, mon- ey wise is still pretty much the same, but he does not get the orowsers he used to. Beckers on Queen Street ap- pears to be facing a slowdown in customers as well. Richard Young, manger of Beckers stated he has noticed a slow down at his store since the mailboxes have been imple- mented. He said the mailboxes are keeping people away from the downtown, people do not have DAY to hit the main street as much as they used to. His store is not the kind peo- ple just drop into to browse, people either need something or they don't. He said people would come to pick up their mail, and if they needed a quart of milk they would get it at that time. at 5 Points MaLL MONDAY, MARCH 5th HERE'S TO YOUR HEALTH ...
