KNOW YOUR FARM INSURANCE by Marlene Werry The Pine Ridge Branch of the Ontario Institute of Agrologists recently received an update on the status of farm insurance. Scott Gray, President of Gray Insurance Brokers Ltd., outlined many of the features of farm in- surance. Apparently income in- surance is not widely used by farm families but is good protec- tion against loss or interruption of income, for example, through a barn fire. The insurance is based on gross earnings of the farm operation and keeps a steady cash inflow during the rebuilding period. Mr. Gray generally felt farmers are under insured and should be insured for replacement value. Farmers should consider different deductibles to help reduce premiums on farm buildings. Also a rebuilding clause will help cut premiums on buildings in good shape. General- ly speaking, farmers should ob- tain as much coverage as possi- ble. For example, buy an "all perils" option as opposed to a "named" perils option. Customization of insurance is required for each individual farm family. Insurance is intended to leave the family in the same financial situation as they were prior to the disaster. Mr. Gray en- couraged farm families to review their insurance policies and have a sound understanding of what their coverage would be in the event of a claim. The Ontario Institute of Agrologists is a professional organization which holds regular meetings on issues concerning the agricultural industry. Farm Credit Corporation raises rates Farm Credit Corporation has announced an interest rate in- crease of three quarters of a percentage point on all its loan products. The changes took effect February 26. The increase is in response to market trends. The five-year fixed interest rate will rise from 12.25 to 13 percent. The interest rate for terms of 10, 15 or more years will increase to 12.75 percent. The Shared Risk Mortgage rate will go up to 13.75 percent; however, this type of loan permits the borrower to share equally with FCC the benefits and costs related to fluc- tuating interest rates. The rate for Farm Syndicate Loans, a type of loan used to finance the shared purchase of equipment and buildings, will be set at 13 percent.
