Record sales of $19.7 billion in 1989 were announced by George A. Peapples, president and general manager of General Motors of Canada Limited. Net in- come for the year amounted to $236.1 million. Sales exceeded GM of Canada's previous record of $19.3 billion set in 1988, in a market which Peap- ples described as the "most com- petitive in the decade with pro- duct offerings from 30 major manufacturers and no fewer than 600 models of cars and trucks." Net income declined to $236.1 million from $359.4 million in 1988, attributable to higher deprecia- tion and tool amortization related to capital spending on new facilities and products, and -a decrease in Canadian sales and exports to the U.S, primarily in the fourth quarter, as the economy in both countries slow- ed and high sales incentives con- tinued throughout the year. Nevertheless, General Motors continued its leadership position in the Canadian market with its dealers selling a total of 509,700 cars and trucks in 1989. Three of the seven best-selling cars in Canada were GM nameplates: Chevrolet Cavalier, Chevrolet Corsica/Beretta and Pontiac Sunbird. The move to smaller, less ex- pensive models was a noticeable trend in 1989 as the economy declined, borne out by strong sales in the compact and subcom- pact segments which accounted for almost 70 percent of industry new car sales. For GM tha. development saw Pontiac Sunbird sales increase almost 18 percent. The Chevrolet Corsica/Beretta and Pontiac Tempest models also posted substantial sales gains of 10.6 percent and 6.7 percent respectively. In the luxury segment, Cadillac remained the product of choice as sales of the re-designed DeVille and Fleetwood soared 25.6 percent. PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, February 27, 1990 -- 29 Sales exceeded G.M. previous record full 48.9 percent of that market, an increase of 1.2 percentage points. Passport International Automobiles, GM's division focus- ed on those customers who prefer imports, showed substantial strength in 1989. Sixty-two Passport dealers sold 9,281 vehicles, more than double the 4,309 units delivered in 1988. Feapples noted that 1989 was another year of transition for GM of Canada as it continued to im- plement its $8 billion investment in new plant facilities and equip- ment. In 1989, GM of Canada in- vested in excess of $1 billion in its plant modernization program. Earnings were impacted by higher depreciation and tooling expense associated with this level of capital spending. Development of Autoplex in Oshawa, Ontario, the largest, most modern assembly complex in North America, focused on adding capacity for the Lumina sedan and introducing the new Buick Regal sedan. Production at the Ste. Therese, Quebec assembly operation which produces the Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera and Chevrolet Celebrity Wagon was interrupted to complete construc- tion of an all-new paint complex utilizing state-of-the-art water- borne, base coat/clear coat technology to provide not only a superior paint finish but also an enhanced environmet result over solvent borne pai .t systems. Following completic ., the plant underwent a planned four month period of acceleration to ensure product quality. Scarborough Van Plant production was also inter- rupted to permit introduction of the full size extended rear-wheel drive vans. IF YOUR AD WAS HERE Over 20,000 people could have read it this week.
