2 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, February 27, 1990 Arena Bd. seeks 5) (From page 1 but said final approval will only come when the Township coun- cil sets its overall municipal budget for 1990. However, the generally positive reaction to the Arena budget by councillors Pearce, Glen Malcolm and Mayor Ho- ward Hall suggest the budget will get council's endorsement. One area of the operating budget that caused concern to the Arena Board members was theincreased cost for hydro. Last year, the hydro bill was $38,400, a 13 per cent jump over 1988. And in 1990, the Board projects hydro costs to hit $43,000. Mr. McCoy told the com- mittee there are a couple of rea- sons for this substantial in- crease. The first is a rate increase from Ontario Hydro of about eight per cent, and the second is the extra cost of putting ice in the building two weeks earlier in September, when the weath- eris still warm. However, Mr. McCoy said that with the installation of de- humidifying unit this summer, it should take less energy to make the ice and maintain it when the weather is still warm IF YOUR AD WAS HERE Over 20,000 people could have read it this week. That's a lot of potential customers for your business. For Adverlising Made Easy call the PORT PERRY STAR 985-7383 in September. He noted that Scugog is one of the few arenas that until now did not have a de- humidifying unit. When questioned by fi- nance committee member Mari- lyn Pearce, Mr. McCoy said put- ting the ice in two weeks earlier in September likely costs more than the revenue generated. But Mr. McCoy said the Board is prepared to put the ice in again early this September. At the committee meeting last Thursday morning, there was also considerable discus- sion about the possibility of pav- ing the Arena parking lot. Mr. McCoy said the Board's recommendation is to pave the west half of the parking lot this year, including the entrance and exit driveways. However, whether that gets done will be up to Town- ship council who will have to make the decision on using mu- nicipal reserve funds to pay for the project. There are no plans in the near future to pave the east part of the parking area, as this land could be part of future ex- pansion of recreational facili- ties for the Township. The proposed.budget calls for a five per cent wage increase for general staff, inline with what other Township employ- ees received. It projects ice rental reve- nues at $143,000, up $11,000 over last year, and revenue from the snack bar at $87,000, up $4300. Wages for snack bar em- ployees will total $17,000 (a slight increase) and the cost of buying snack bar goods is set at $51,000, same as last year. Mr. McCoy said it is diffi- cult to project snack bar reve- nues and expenses because The Domino Effect No doubt about it, these are five beautiful bables. Mr. McCoy told the Star af- ter the meeting, the Board has had to order circuits for the time clock from California, and the Board is in the process of explor- ing the possibility of having a lighted exterior sign donated to the Arena.
