PE AC Lm or Rey ree 26 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, February 27, 1990 MNR charges 35 with hunting, fishing and firearm violations The Ministry of Natural Resources has charged 35 people from 12 Ontario communities with 310 violations for illegal hunting, fishing and use of firearms. In addition, the Ontario Provin- cial Police have laid four charges under the Criminal Code in con- nection with the same investigation. The charges result from a two- year intensive investigation car- ried out by 26 MNR conservation officers. The OPP assisted in gathering evidence be reporting incidents of suspicious activity. The centre of the operation was Manitoulin Island. Twenty-one people from Manitoulin Island are involved in the charges. In ad- dition, charges were laid against people from Nairn Centre, Sud- bury, Windsor, Niagara Falls, Whitefish Falls and Toronto. MNR laid charges between January 8 and 12 in provincial of- fences court in Gore Bay. MNR and the OPP served summonses on defendants on January 13. Under the Game and Fish Act, the charge of careless hunting carries a maximum fine of $5,000, a maximum jail sentence of one year, or both. All other charges under that Act carry a maximum fine of $5,000 with no minimum fine. The charges under the federal Fisheries Act carry a maximum fine of $5,000, a max- imum jail sentence of 12 months or both.
