Cornish made i to the semi-finals in the Provincial Elementary School Chamlonships that were held in Newmarket. Pictured are(l-r) Graham Holt, Lisa Pereman, Sonya Henke, and Andrew Port team wins Provincial C Division curling trophy The Provincial Elementary School Championships were held in Newmarket on February 17, and 18. 132 students participated in this exciting competition. The host school was Park Avenue Public School, and they certainly did their community proud. R.H. Cornish was pleased to have 9 students participate in this event. Andrew Jones' rink of Lisa Pereman, Graham Holt and Son- ja Henke went through in the main event winning their first 3 games and losing in the semi finals to Deer Park, who went on to win the main event and become the Provincial Champs. Richie Tripp who actually was an extra player for our Cornish teams, ended up skipping a com- bination team made up of spare players, as one team did not show up for the competition. This team showed what curling is really all about. They actually only lost 1 game, but were given 2 losses to make it fair to the other "teams. Richie's team, a player form Morning Glory, a player from Sutton, and a player from Newmarket after 2 losses went on Legionaires come to end of line with 3-2 loss to Cobourg Cougars After their strong start, the Port Perry Legion Pee Wee A's ran into some tough luck and have been eliminated from further O0.M.H.A. playdown action. Monday night, the Legionaires hosted Cobourg in Game 4, holding a 2-1 lead. This was the third game in three days and the strain appeared to show on the smaller Port team. The Cougars pumped in two goals in less than a minute midway through the first period and never looked back. They had taken a 3-0 lead by the time Kenton LeFort got Port on the board with a nice wrist shot from the slot after Jay King had rushed the puck up ice. Craig Laird also assisted on the goal. The surge was squashed in about 30 seconds when Cobourg regained the 3 goal spread. Scott Heasman blasted a Chad Kearns pass in from the blue line on a power play early in the third. Jeremy Norton earned an assist on the play. The Cougars scored again later to claim a 5-2 win and force a fifth game in Cobourg, in spite of a solid game from Mike Pashley who blocked a lot of rubber. Wednesday night the Legionaires went to Cobourg one more time, and again produced a valiant effort. Although Port con- trolled much of the early play, missed chances hurt; then the Cougars got a jump start after 7 seconds of a rather questionable power play. 30 seconds later they had a 2-0 lead to carry into the se- cond period. Early in the third, Cobourg took a 3-0 lead, then Port fired 2 goals in a span of 13 seconds with over 11 minutes to play. Jeremy scored the first on a blast of Chad's pass from a faceoff, then Chad scored unassisted on a wraparound effort. Port applied almost continuous pressure for the remaining time, but the Cougars held on, with some help, for a 3-2 victory and the right to advance against Kingston Township. The Legionaires have many reasons to hold their heads up after this series. The common comment from Cobourg fans was "your team has a lot of heart." This is definitely the case, and with the one exception, Port outplayed Cobourg on most nights. The loss of high scoring, hard hitting Jay Tredway was too much to overcome when match- ed up with a team as good as the Cougars. Coaches Geer, Teno and Burnett should be commended on the gutsy play of their team who were outweighed just about every time they took to the ice this season. to win the D event. Congratula- tions Coach Reg Philip and R.H. Cornish participants for a fine showing on the weekend. The main event winners were given an extra treat by playing against Eddy Werenich's rink while the other event finals were being played. Mr. Werenich was available all weekend to these competitors for pictures and many autographs. He certainly is a great promoter of the sport of curling. Once again Port Perry has been asked if we could host next year's event and with a lot of community support this could be possible.
