Details of a new contract between the Durham Catholic Separate School Board and its high school teachers were re- leased last week after both sides ratified the deal. But the major issue in the dispute, which led to a three week strike of Catholic high school teachers, will be settled - bybinding arbitration. Both teachers and the board d to a three-person arbitration panel made up of a chairman agreeable to both sides, and two members nomi- nated by the Board and the teachers. The arbitration panel will come up with salary levels for 1989-90 and 1990-91 for teach- ers, principals, vice principals, consultants and resource teach- ers. Some of the issués that were settled include a reduction in the PTR from the present 17:1 to 16.5:1 effective Sept. 1, 1991. Effective this September, the class size guidelines will be 32 for advanced level, 27 for general level and 21 for basic level. These guidelines can be exceeded by no more than three students. aR .. The teachers chief negotia- tor will be granted ten days leave each school year, and the Branch affiliate's local presi- dent will be allowed half-time leave to work on affiliate busi- ness, The travel allowance has been increased to 25 cents per km. It was 22.48 cents. And the maximum of 280 days credit for any teacher at the end of any school year is increased to 240 days.
