Lake Scugog Historical Society presents Cathedal's in England day wish. Please call Peggy Bredin with your news. Everyone enjoyed Christian unity by Michelle Bull Who would have believed it fif- ty years ago? In fact, there might have been a few sceptics even last week. Who would have believed that four hundred Christians from at least seven different denomina- tions could gather together to celebrate Christian unity, and thoroughly enjoy the whole thing? But that is exactly what hap- pened on Sunday evening February 18, at the Emmanuel Pentecostal Church in Port Perry. The Service in Celebration of Christian Unity was sponsored. by the Scugog - Ministerial Association (to which most of the Christian ministers in Scugog belong) and it was planned cooperatively by them. Most of the churches were involved in the program, or behind the scenes, and members of all the different denominations, about four hun- dred people in all, attended, wor- shipped, prayed, and had a good time together. Pastor David Beesley of Em- manuel Pentecostal welcomed us and acted as M.C.. Vic Walker of the same church led us in some rousing and moving hymns and choruses. The Port Perry United Church choir sang two beautiful anthems, and the Scugog Chris- tian School Chime Choir played two lovely pieces as well. Scrip- ture was read by the Rev. Bob LePage of the Port Perry United Church and by Regina Gedge of the Church of the Immaculate Conception. The Rev. Charles Bull of the Scugog Anglican Chur- ches preached the sermon. The service concluded with the 'a capella' singing ot the Loras Prayer and with prayers and blessing by the Rev. Bart Van Eyk of Hope Christian Reformed Church. Quite an impressive pro- gram! And then there were refreshments prepared by the Pentecostal and Epsom-Utica United Church members. Throughout the service and the fellowship afterwards, there was a spirit of thanksgiving and joy. We all knew that we still have dif- ferences, but no one wanted to talk about them. Some people con- fessed that they had been a little sceptical about "those other chur- ches" before they came, but they were happily, joyfully, humbly convinced by the time it was over, that what we have in common is far more important than what divides us. Organizers were overwhelmed and delighted by the enthusiastic response (services in the past have not been very well attend- ed). All over the hall afterwards, one could hear people talking hap- pily of plans for future services and for more and more coopera- tion between the churches in Scugog. So if you were unfor- tunate enough to miss this ser- vice, don't worry! There will cer- tainly be more to come. 12%% 11.55% 11%% 11-1/8% 11-1/8% (Rates Subject to Change Without Notice) -- WINDOW FASHIONS -- VERTICALS * MINI * MICRO BLINDS PLEATED & ROLLER SHADES DRAPERIES i» Hundreds of Fabrics & Colours to Choose From.
