PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, February 13, 1990 -- 31 Petites take series lead over Lindsay On Sunday afternoon, the Port Perry /Petites sponsored by Bruton's I.D.A. travelled to Lind- i say for the first of the playoff games. The girls were ready for this one, as they did not want a repeat of the loss which they had suffered in the last match. They were successful, and this showed in the 12-2 score for Port Perry. The ref must have received a new whistle for his birthday, as the game was long and filled with many interrupted plays. Our Port girls started slowly, and the ac- tion was in our end for the first five minutes of the game. When the red and white sweaters final- ly broke out, the sky fell in for Lindsay. Our girls quickly figured out that the small male goalie for Lindsay had a weakness high on his glove side, and soon every shot was aimed in that direction. It seemed that almost every at- tempt after that resulted in a score. It was enjoyable to see the Port girls playing as a team, making excellent passing plays, and rely- ing on each other instead of on in- dividual effort to score. One of the nicest passing plays we have seen in several games started back in Port's end with Joan, went over the blueline right on the stick of Tasha, and ended up on Cindy's stick in front of their net where she was anticipating a perfect goal. Assists were scattered around the team, with many of them go- ing to the defence who often began the play. Natasha had an ex- cellent game, and earned 3 assists. Shona, the human Zam- boni, also got 3 assists. Cara received 2, and Dana, Mandy , Jenny. Leanne, Michelle and Joan each got 1. Scoring for Port were Brandy with 6 goals, Joan and Lynda with 3 goals each, and Cindy and Dana with 1 goal apiece. Equally important in this game was the defence led by Katie who played an excellent game in goal. Lindsay has several very strong forwards who seldom miss on a shot; however, they were frustrated in their many at- tempts. During one Port penalty, Katie caught and blocked and kicked out 8 sure shots before one slid through. Helping her were Shona and Jenny whose ex- perience and strength make them indispensible. Melissa D. and Leeanne who are playing their first year of ringette have both improved so much that the op- postiton think twice before tangl- ing with them. The Petites are participating in the Mariposa Tournament this weekend, with the first game against Pickering being played in Oakwood on Wednesday at 7:00. The next league playoff game is on March 10 against Sunderland. Erin Chellew stood on the second step of the podium to receive her sliver medal, for her second place finish In the Pre-Juvenile division. :
