With 7-3 victory in the deciding game of series PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, February 13, 1990 -- 29 Port Bantams knock out Cobourg rivals For Blades Bantams of Port Perry, the worst is said to be behind them, as they have dumped Cobourg out of the playoffs, The Goreski Insulators spon- sored by Goreski Insulation knocked out the Cougars Friday night in downtown Cobourg at the barn by a 7-5 score. Did the team feel fine! The Insulators outplayed the Cougars in the final 2 games to claim a ticket to the next round of the All-Ontario playdowns. Discipline, hustle and heart were the key ingredients to this series and that will have to continue from now on. Blades was feelin' fine Friday too as it was the first time is 3 years he has' gotten by the Cougars in the playoffs. This series proved to be a see-saw bat- tle as the series was tied twice before Port took total control in the final two games before clin- ching the series. Port suffered a devasting blow last Tuesday night as they lost 8-2 to Cobourg in Cobourg in game 3 of the series. Cobourg led 2 games to 1. Scoring Port's goals were Bricknell and J. Cochrane with the assists to these tallies - Laird and G. Cochrane. The next even- ing, back home in Port, it was a whole new ballgame. Port came out flying as they knew they were living on the edge "as Cobourg was ahead in the series 2-1. Nobody wanted to get out the golfclubs this early, not even captain Parry as he and the team bumped and ground, in the corners, to earn themselves a 6-3 victory without Coach Wilbur behind the bench. The team was one minute over the limit one night earlier. Coach Wilbur wasn't too pleased but we're sure he's feelin' fine right now! Larocque got the call in net and played a tremendous hockey game while depriving Cobourg's offence. It was all Port in this one as they outplayed Cobourg in every aspect of the game. Even though Cobourg was first to score - twice on two powerplays - the team seemed to awaken and decided they should saturate the oppositions net. At the 4:21 mark of the first, Moase got us rolling off a nice set up from Laird and Vanderligt. Then on the powerplay as Cobourg got stupid, G. Cochrane blistered an ice-hugger that found the far corner. Assisting were Laird and Parry. Then on another powerplay it was Laird who one-timed it from the side of the net to make it 3-2 Port. Assists to G. Cochrane and Parry, folks, it's not over yet. At the end of one period it was 3-2 for the good guys. This next goal was a beauty as J. Cochrane, Laird and Parry combined on a little magic that set the table for a 4-2 hockey game. A lot of hustle and grinding in the corners pays off as this trio threw it behind the net a couple of times before bulging twine. Parry to Laird to Parry to Laird out front to J. Cochrane and in the net for the goal of the year. Then it was these guys again as Parry popped one home on a similar play. Assists to Laird and J. Cochrane. Time of the goal 8:33. Cobourg had to score once Sportsland hot for 11-1 Last Wednesday, the Sport- sland Bantams were involved in a blow-out. The Sportsland team defeated Beaverton with a score of 11-1. Scoring for the Bantam team was Dean McEnaney; 2 goals and 2 assists, Ryan Picard; 3 goals and 2 assists, Lindsay Parry; 1 goal and 2 assists, Todd Smart; 1 goal and 2 assists, Jason Coutoulakis, 1 goal and 1 assist, Scott Wylie; 2 goals and 1 assist, Steven Desautels 1 goal, Noah St. Amond 3 assist, Chad Garvock 1 assist, Pete King, 1 assist. Even tough we scored a lot of goals, we still spent time in the penalty box. The Port team had a total of 20 minutes throughout the game. Thanks to Louie Whitfield for coming out to play a great defen- sive game for us. Bantam Causeway Esso 4 Frank Real Estate 4 Last Wednesday night the troops on both teams battled hard to a four all tie. Both Greg Rankin and Steve Stiles were spectacular at times keeping their team in the fray. Chris Cooper opened the scor- ing in the first when he took a shot from the blueline that the goalie was only partly able to block. The Esso team was able to tie it just a minute later when Darrin Hope scored from a scramble in front of the Frank net. Frank went ahead again less than a minute later when Chris Cooper went down the wing victory On Saturday Feb. 10, the Ban- tams travelled to Peterborough for a playoff match. Port was left empty-handed as Peterborough walked away with the 5-3 win. Peterborough scored early in the first, but Port tied it up. a minute later, the goal was scored by Steve Desautels, assisted by Sean McEnaney. Port scored two more times in the first with Pete King from Lindsay Parry and Steven Desautels and Aron Royal from Todd Smart and Noah St. Amond. The home teams responded to this in no time and they took the lead. The final score, Peter- borough 5, Port 3. Port's next home game is on Wednesday, when they meet the team from Haliburton, game time 7:40 p.m.. HL news holding a defender off with one hand and back handing the puck in with the other, a nice effort. With seconds remaining in the first, Esso were able to tie it when Andrew Pereman deflected in a shot from the blueline. Esso outscored Frank 2 to 1 in the se- cond. Once on Troy Hope's screened shot from the slot and once on a powerplay when Louis Whitfield set up Heath Hudson. Rob Romano set up Daryl Slack for Frank's only marker. With only five minutes remain- ing in the game Stephen Parish went in alone, no one was stoop- ing him, banged the puck home to tie the score. more to make it 5-3 before newcomer McEnaney scored his first in a Turtle juersey to put a damper on things. Laird passed to J. Cochrane out front, then J. Cochrane literally spoon fed Macker for his first as a turtle. The final score was very im- pressive as Port hammered them 6-3. The atmosphere in the dressing room after the game was a rather pretty sight for Blades and the gang as they could smell victory going into Friday's final game - winner moving on - losers to the links). Friday night in Cobourg was a rather fun evening out for Port Perry, let's see a win over the Cougars 7-5, Blades first series over Cobourg in 3 years. Cheers and sweat and an escort by the police out of the arena after the conclusion of the game. Doesn't that sound like a groovy night on the town. We'll tell ya Blades wanted to party after the beating up on Cobourg, as he wanted to celebrate after 3 years of hard work and determination. Blades and his turtles arsenal was obviously loaded on this night as they purchased 7 goals in front - of the Cobourg fans. Hutchinson started this one as Larocque - Podborski was on a ski trip and got to the game at the conclusion of the first. Port fired one home :15 seconds in as J. Cochrane popped one home while cutting to the net. Assists to Laird and Parry. Then Cobourg scored on the powerplay to make it one-one. Penalties can kill a team especial- ly when the other team has a good powerplay like Cobourg. Then at the 4:46 mark of the first, Logan stamped on a re- bound and cashed in. Assists to McBride and Vanderligt. Port was leading 2-1. The powerplay was key in this game, for Port as they managed to cash in a couple of times. An example of this was when J. Cochrane ripped one top-corner, where the cookies are, from Bricknell and Parry. Another ex- ample was when G. Cochrane moved in on the powerplay and picked up the garbage rebound to score, to make it 4-1 Port. Assists to Parry and Bricknell. Beautiful! This next goal was a billiard shot as Laird dumped one in from the redline. It went off the defenseman's skate before going through the goalie's pads. What a goal! Assists going to J. Cochrane and D. Vander Slagt. Then one minute later, it was Laird on the powerplay as he crammed one in from behind the cage like Gretzky. Sorry Wayne! Assisting on the goal was J. Cochrane as he fed the pass in to Laird. Cobourg scored 2 more goals as Port slacked off and took some foolish penalties. The last marker on this night for Port was by McBride on a re- bound from Logan and Vanderligt. The final score was Port Perry 7 goals and the series, Cobourg 5 goals and the golf - memberships. The only thing we can say is that Blades was a happy man and the whole team deserved to win as they hustled till the end.
