26 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, February 13, 1990 PORT PERRY STAR MoJacks turn up The Port Perry ModJacks have advanced to the next round of the Central Junior C playoffs. They did it in very convinc- ing fashion in front of a large boisterous crowd Sunday night at the Scugog Arena, defeating the Ajax Axemen 9-2 to take the best of seven series four games toone. The team began to gather momentum last Thursday night when they dumped the Axemen 7-3, but in Sunday's game the ModJacks caught fire in the second period, firing sev- en goals in what was a dramatic display of scoring power. They took a 9-1 lead into the dressing room after forty minutes and then played it cos- ey in the third to come away with the 9-2 win. Coach Ken Harman was delighted with the outcome and praised the performance of all four forward lines. "The guys really started to come together, they did a great Job of turning the puck over from defense to the offense," he told the Star following the game. He said there was no par- ticular change in strategy in games four and five, other than to concentrate on keeping Ajax's Justin Moore off the sco- resheet. And he was pleased that forward John Lally has re- turned to the lineup, noting that Lally "makes things hap- penoutthere." As for the next round, the MoJacks aren't exactly sure at this time just who their oppo- nents will be but coach Harman said "if we play like we did to- night (against Ajax) we're going tobe tough to beat." Warren Geer was a scoring spark for the MoJacks in the 9-2 romp as he connected for six points (one goal, five assists) And linemates John Har- man and Brad Menzies also had big games. Harman picked up two goals and three assists, while Menzies and a goal and three assists. In total, this line count- ed 15 points Sunday evening. Len Giacalone collected a pair of goals, with singles to Jim Vernon, Jim Gibbens and Dar- rin Lee. The second period in Sun- day's game was the best the Mo- Jacks have looked all season. They scored seven goals, several of them the text-book variety on tic-tac-toe passing plays and out-shot the Axemen 19-7. In total, the MoJacks fired 37 shots at the Ajax net, while the Axemen had 26 on Dwayne Mackie in the MoJack cage. He had to be sharp on occa- sion before the game got out of reach, and late in the third peri- od, he picked a puck out of a trafficjam with the trapper that left the Nax forwards shaking their heads in amazement. This was a fairly clean hockey game with ten minors to the MoJacks and 14 to the Axe- men. The Axemen, to their cred- it, kept their cool in the third pe- riod with the game out of reach, and showed some class in bow- ing out of the playoffs graceful- y. The MoJacks went ahead two games to one in this series on Feb. 6 in Ajax as they nipped the Axemen 6-5. A short-handed goal by Len Giacalone in the third period proved to be the game winner as he was set up by Brad Menzies and Warren Geer. Other goal scorers in this one for the MoJacks were Jim Gibbens, John Harman, Darrin Lee, Todd Taylor and Jarrett Harman. Justin Moore fired a pair for the Axemen. Tony Sortino got the call again in net and faced 27 shots, while at the other end of the rink Tom Gosleigh was tested 26 times by the MoJacks. Sortino had to come up with a couple of very large stops in the dying seconds of the game to preserve the 6-65 victory. The teams stuck tohockey in this game with the Axemen taking seven minor and the Mo- Jacks ten. The series swung back to the Scugog Arena for game four on Thursday night, and the Mo- Jacks simply out-worked and out-hustled the Axemen for a 7- 3 win and a commanding three games toone lead in the series. And nobody on the Mo- Jacks worked harder that night than Darrin Lee. He turned in a superb two- way performance throwing tne SPORTS the heat to oust Axemen aX We ee A Rn. af % it looked more like football than hockey on this play as members of the MoJacks and Ajax Axemen piled Into the net during Junior C playoff game Sunday at the Scugog Are- na. The MoJacks caught fire in the second period with sev- en goals en route to a 9-2 victory and knocked Ajax from the Axemen oft stride all game with his tenacious fore-checking. Midway through the sec- ond period with the MoJacks leading 3-2 and the game still very much up for grabs, Lee was brilliant as he helped kill off a string of penalties. And it was only fitting that after all his hard work, he popped in the last two goals for the MoJacks. For 30 minutes, this game was much closer than the final score mightindicate. After a scoreless first peri- od, Axemen took a 1-Olead early in the second on a power play. Five minutes later John Lally, in his first game in sever- al, shovelled in a rebound on a power play. Todd Taylor gave MoJacks a short-lived 2-1 lead before the Axemen tied things at deuces at 8:49. At 9:50, defenseman Paul Wilkins made a fine play to con-' trol the puck at the Ajax blue line and he got off a hard shot that just made it over the line for a 3-2 MoJack lead. That goal and then the fi- nal penalty killing by Lee, Todd Taylor and Len Giacalone seemed to bring the MoJacks to life. With under two minutes left in the period, Jim Vernon was set up in the slot by Gibson and Connors and he un-loaded with the back-hand that sailed past a startled Chris Goreski. 1 . MoJacks now advance to the next round of playoffs, but as of now don't know who thelr opponents will be. (see story for the detalis) The third period was pretty much Port Perry's as Chris Arsenault walked in from the left side at 1:45 to make it 5-2, and later in the period, Lee add- ed his two goals to put the game way out of reach. This was the strongest out- ing for the MoJacks to date in the series as they out-shot the Axemen 44-25. Tony Sortino didn't have a lot of work, but he came up with key saves at crucial times. He made one pad stop early in the game on a point-blank shot that was a beauty. Things got a bit chippy late in the contest with ref John Cane handing out numerous penalties to both sides in an ef- fort to keep the lid on any hostil- ities that threatened to break out. SLAPSHOTS: MoJacks out-scored the Axemen 31-17 in the five game series. The defense of Paul Wil- kins, Rob Willetts, Steve Con- nors, Rob Metcalfe, Chris Arse- nault deserves a lot of credit for the series victory. They played very well, and Tony Sortino and Dwayne Mackie came up with the key saves when needed in the ModJack goal. Just who the MoJacks will meet in the second round is up in the air (as of Monday morn- ing) The Uxbridge Bruins won their series four games to one over Lakefield, thanks to an 11- yt _ countsthemest, , But Sunday night, the Co- bourg Cougers nipped Bowman- ville 5-4 to stave off elimination in that series. Game six was Monday in Cobourg. If the Eagles go on to win their series over Cobourg, they will have the option of taking a bye or playing the next series. If they take the bye, it means Port Perry and Uxbridge will hook up in round two and Bowmanville will meet the win- ner of that one. But if for some reason (add- ed gate receipts, for example) Bowmanville waves the bye and decides to play, the MoJacks will have the option of the bye, and if they take the bye, Bow- manville and Uxbridge will meet in round two. With the Bowmanville- Cobourg series going to five games at least, the Eagle should they win likely will take the bye, which will put Port Perry against Uxbridge. If that happens, it's likely the series could open in Ux- bridge this Friday evening (Feb. 16) and then swing back to Port for game two on a night For MoJacks fans, once the picture is clear, watch for pos- ters at the Arena and around the community. But one thing is certain, the MoJacks have some mo- mentum going, and if the Ajax series is any indication, they are playing fine hockey when it SL EEL I Ls ha Wie wn
