Further more there isa restriction on when snowmobiles may be operated, which bans the use between the hours of 1a.m., and 7a.m. | will be the first to agree that | am sure there are some Snow- mobilers who are ignoring the restrictions, and that is why the by-law was made to protect the public from these few inconsid- erate operators. If there is a snowmobile flying by your house at 2 a.m., one cutting you off on Queen Street, or one doing "donuts" in your backyard, call the police, call the snowmobile wardens. If the Goriierh is not made to stop, it willcontinue if they can get away with it. The Snowmobile Club wardens are genuinely interested in their sport, they want its reputation upheld. They have only been deputized two short weeks. Don't banish an entire long list of snowmobilers from enjoying their sport, for the one idiot who is tearing up your yard. As for the dreaded ice fisherman , is it really the ice huts that are bothering people?. The suggestion that fisherman should bring their hut in every night is absurd. How a fish hut in the middle of the lake can hurt anything | do not know. Who are they bothering, the snowmobil- er who isn't wanted out there either? The only hazard on the lake are the other people who are out there for "Who knows what reason". The people that are break- ing into huts, stealing lanterns, heaters, and just enjoying the thrill of destruction. What do these people think others are hiding in their huts, money, jewels, stocks, bonds? Or is it just the thrill of saying "Hey guys look what | ripped off." These people are the only real hazards on the lake. I guess all these problems could be solved by just banning snowmobilers, and ice huts, to leave Lake Scugog deserted. A lake that brings in hundreds of people to the town, a lake that brings in a lot of dollars to local stores. With out these recrea- tional activities what would Port Perry be, everyone would go Slseuhere to enjoy their sport, whether it be fishing, or snowmo- iling. 1 do not call that a solution. The only solution is to give the po- lice, and the snowmobile wardens a chance, let them prove their sport is not so bad. Tower, Mosport, or the northern country, John Dafoe can take you there, without the hassle of traffic delays. Mr. Dafoe is a Sammercial Pilot, who for $75 per hour takes individuals on scenic toursof the area. He has been a pilot for 156 years, and began doing tours about a year ago. He was a bush pilot in Thun- der Bay for three years, and an instructor in Vancouver for two years. He decided a year ago to take on tours, and he describes it as quite an interesting experi- ence. "It is really something every- one should experience, to go and take a flight around, I think it is something new for this area," he said. Mr. Dafoe does his tours mostly out of Oshawa Airport, but has taking flights out of Lindsay, and Greenbank. He rents a plane from the clubs, ususally a Cessna 172, whichis a four seater airplane. "After a while I may incur the expense of my own airplane, maybe go into a patnership with a couple others," he said. He began flying in this area in 1977, s0in 12 years he knows the area well. He has a commercial pilot li- cense, a float endorsement, and a night flying license. He does not do many night flights, but said they are the thing to experience. "People I believe, don't think they will be able tosee anything if they take a flight at night," he said. But he explains that travel- ling over Lake Scugog on an evening when there is a full moon is quite a sight to behold. "The light from the moon re- flects off the snow on the lake, and you can see all the activity below," he said. He also has taken passen- gers by the C.N. Tower, to see all the lights at night. Mr. Dafoe explains he re- ceives many different requests from people on what it is they wish to see. Some of his most common re- qests are people want to fly over their own homes, and take a few pictues. Others like to fly over Mosport Race Track, when races are goingon. John Dafoe He takes a lot of fisherman, and snowmobilers aboard, who may be looking for trails, or lakes to visit. Many of these trails and lakes are only access- ible by boat, or snowmobile, and are not very often fished. He said they see these lakes from above, and may later de- cide that is where they will do their fishing or snowmobiling for a change. Many also have places of spe- cial interest to them they wish to fly over. Skiers often want to fly over ski hills, and see the ac- tivity below them. Many others want to see the lake, and fly around the island. Most of his flights last about one hour. "People do not realize how much they can see in an hour, by the time the hour is up, most are tired and want to go home, they have seen what they came up tosee,"" he said. One of his common flights in- cludes a take off from Oshawa, where he flys south to the shoreline to see downtown Oshawa, then travels east over the Darlington Power Plant. Then continuing north to Mos- port then to Port Perry, and back to Oshawa. This entire scenic flight lasts almost exact- ly one hour. One misconception many have about flying, is that it should be done in the summer, not the winter months. "In actual fact winter is the best flying. The air is more stable, being colder, which re- sults in a nice comfortable, easy ride, as well as very scenic," he said. To fly over Lake Scugog in the winter is very interesting. To see the ski-doo's, hang- gliders, 4-wheelers, motorcross races, and hundreds of ice huts. He said Lake Scugog is just as busy in the winter as the sum- mer, and is always interesting to view from above. One thing that he may begin to do is aerial photography. He really hasn't got into this too much, but says aerial shots from above are great for post- cards. According to Mr. Dafoe scenic tours via airplane attract peo- ple of all ages. Older people like to fly in the fall, and see all the colors, the younger like to fly in the winter, and summer, may- be looking for trails, lakes, or just totake in the scenery. The youngest guest on his plane has been 10, and the old- est 65. "There is a really good cross- section, it is of wide-open inter- est to people of all ages," he said If someone wishes to book a flight he advises them to book about a week in advance, twoor three days atleast. The weather is the main fac- tor on whether or not the flight will go off, but he describesit as an experience you must do for yourself. "I suggest to everyone to try it for 15 minutes. By that time people either like it, or I take them down and that's it for them," he said.
