PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, February 6, 1990 -- 29 Wrestlers busy ¥: The annual Robert Fletcher Memorial Mixed Curling Spiel was held Saturday at Black- Ny stock Arena. Scott Fletcher presents trophy to skip Carol Gray and team members John Coates, Helen Coates and Brian Gray. The team had 37.75 points In two games, the same as Ron Vice's rink, but took the trophy when tie-breaker rules were applied. Just what Grovie had ordered! Scugog Mens League Game one was a tight, hard fought battle in which Andersons squeeked past J & D 1-0 in Scugog Men's Hockey action Sunday morning. The lone marker for Andersons was Rob Kroonenberg from Doug Suppelsa and Ray Gibson. Both goalies played great games in net with Ray Gibson picking up the shutout for Andersons. The second game was totally opposite from the first as Nortons skated past Crandells 7-5. Leading the way for Nortons were Mark Jobb 2 goals, 2 assists, Bill Van Camp 2 goals, 1 assist, Terry Rose 1 goal, 1 assist, Henry Forderer 1 goal, 1 assist and Dave Roth 1 goal. Adding assists were Brian Samis 4, Glen Howsam, Donovan Smith and Mark Burger had singles. Fighting back for Crandells were John Robertson 2 goals, 1 assist, Phil Wamsley 1 goal, 2 assists, Ken Jeffrey 1 goal, 3 assists and Bart Wager 1 goal, 1 assist. Scott Davis and Rick Olaisen had single assists in this event. Game three was a spectacle in itself as two teams played great end to end hockey only to be stop- ped when they got to the opposi- tions goalie. As far back as we can remember we don't believe there has been a 0-0 tie in this league but Larocque Electric and Compton Cable T.V. accomplished that as they battled it out but just couldn't get any breaks. MoJacks split (From page 28) And defenseman Chris Arsenault saw limited action Sunday night after taking shot on the ankle in the pre-game warm-up. MoJacks need both these guysin the line-up. Warren Geer had a strong two games with six points (one goal and five assists) and he logged a lot of ice time on for- ward, defense, the power play and killing penalties. And Len Giacalone and Dave Burnett each have two goals to date. This series could be a long, NEW FROM LEEWARD IA(1990 LeeWard Pools Equipment Lid. tough grind, if Sunday's game is any indication. The Port Perry Armwrestling Team have been very busy and successful in numerous tour- naments since their local ap- pearance at the Fourth Annual Port Perry Festival Days Cham- pionships last July. In the interim they competed in the North American Championships held at Amos, Quebec (July, 1989), the Canadian Championships in Toronto (October), the Huronia Cup, Penetanguishene (November) as well as a number of Ontario competitions in places such as Sutton, Woodstock, Bar- rie and Ottawa. Most recently, on January 27th, the team flew to Sault Sainte Marie, Ontario, to participate in the Fifteenth Annual Bon Soo Car- nival Championship. It should be no surprise that, as usual, they were successful and garnered a number of awards: Garth Carlson (sponsored by Wiggans Land- scaping, Bowmanville) was undefeated all day and took First Place in the Middleweight category. Terry Barton (spon- sored by T.L.K. Construction) finished with a Second Place trophy in the Featherweight divi- sion; Mike Haigh (sponsored by June and Gerry Schildt) also col- lected a Second Place trophy in Lightweight, and teammate Pat Mastrangelo (sponsored by Re/Max Realty and Kingsway Limousine, Oshawa) in the same class. Mike Gould, who has been prac- ticing with the Team since May, 1989, and was welcomed as a member in December, demonstrated how well he fits in- to the tightly-knit unit by taking Third Place in the Middleweight division. As has become a tradi- tion for Port Perry Armwrestling, the Team donated a trophy to the Most Sportsmanlike Competitor at the Bon Soo Championship; this year the coveted award went to Nancy Trinka of Sault Sainte or a Trip for Two to Tobago from Sun Calypso Holidays (many other door prizes) Tickets $5.00 5 Ph Hi For Ticket Information x RUN Please call | toomingion 58. Mike Haigh told the Star: "We never expected to be singled out for a special award, but we cer- tainly appreciated the recogni- tion. The people at the Soo always give us a really warm welcome and are very generous with their hospitality; They run a great Tournament with high calibre competition, and it's one of our favourite events each year."
