28 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, February 6, 1990 PORT PERRY STAR SPORTS After dropping series opener 5-4 to the Ajax Axemen The Port Perry MoJacks and Ajax Axemen have split the first two games of their best-of- seven opening playoff round in the Central Junior C Hockey League. The Axemen took game one 5-4 Saturday night on home ice thanks to a fine netminding per- formance from Chris Goreski. But 24 hours later as the series moved to the Scugog Are- na, the MoJacks evened things iA as they tripped the visitors Game three is slated for this evening (Feb. 6) in Ajax at 8:00 PM and game four is in Port Perry on Thursday with faceoffat 8:30. In game one, the MoJacks fired 34 shots at Ajax goalie 3 Chris Goreski, but could only get four pucks past him as he helped his team to the 5-4 victo- ry. ModJacks trailed 2-0 after the first period, 3-2 after 40 minutes and the teams each col- lected two more goals in the fi- nal frame. Dave Burnett, Len Giaca- lone, Warren Geer and Brad Menzies did the scoring for the MoJacks, with Menzies, Geer and John Harman collecting two assists in this one. For the Axemen, Justin Moore had a hat trick, and the eventual game winner came off the stick of Jeremy Stewart. Axemen were assessed 12 minor and the MoJacks ten in this fairly clean hockey game. MoJacks re-bound with 5-2 victory In front of the home town crowd Sunday night, it looked for a while like the MoJacks still had not figured out how to get the puck past Goreski as the fell behind 1-0 in the first peri- od. And even with several pow- er play chances, MoJacks came up empty. They were moving the puck around the perimeter on the power play, but had a dearth of quality scoring chances. John Harman managed to knot the score at 1-1 in the final minute when he collected a Rob Willetts rebound at the side of net and slid the puck home from avery sharp angle. But mid-way through the second, the MoJacks took the lead when Dave Burnett de- flected a shot from the point with Geer and Harman draw- ing the assists. Burnett was positioned in the high slot area on a power play to tip the puck into the top of the net. This was a tough, hard- hitting, grinding hockey game with both teams doing a lot of checking between the blue lines, and the result was few de- cent shots on goal. In fact, in the middle period, Ajax had nine shots and MoJacks were held to just six. One of the hardest hits of the game came when Len Giaca- lone caught Dan Mallen with an open ice body check, an old- fashioned shoulder check that knocked the Ajax player sprawling. The third period was just three minutes old when Todd Taylor got what proved to the .game winner. He collected a pass from Geer, stepped across the line and using the Ajax defense as a partial screen, fired low along the ice. Goreski seemed to be moving away from the shot, and series as the Axemen won 5-4 Saturday night In Ajax and the MoJacks won 5-2 Sunday night at the Scugog Arena. The teams are playing, tough, hard hitting, grinding hockey, typical of the playoffs. (see story for details) ModJacks forward Kevin Desroslers found himself sur- rounded by the black jerseys of the Ajax Axemen on this play as Junior C playoffs between Port Perry and Ajax got underway over the weekend. So far, it has been a "homer" On the playoff trail Sportsland Bantams nip P'boro On Wednesday January 31, 1990, the Sportsland Bantam II's finally beat the tough team from Peterborough with a score of 3-2. Playing an amazing game, it was a nailbiter right down to the last Tykes on road On Saturday, January 27 the Advanced Tyke team went to its first tournament and the first game against another town. Sponsored by the C.A.W. and Brooks Feeds, the boys played against the home team from Warkworth winning 8-1. Goals were scored by Steven Wygerde with 4 and one each went to Braden Tarbotton, Jason Whitworth, Scotty Brownson and Billy Carr. Billy Carr, Michael Dalby, Scotty Brownson and Mike LeFort got the assists on those goals. The next game the Port Perry team came up against a strong Trenton team. The boys played as hard as they could and never gave up right down to the final whistle before being defeated 6-3. Goal scorers for the Trenton game were Sean Jeffrey assisted by David Justynski and Jason Whitworth , Scotty Brownson assisted by Billy Carr and Braden Tarbotton assisted by Matthew MacMaster. Other members of the team that played well in Warkworth were: Beau Jolicoeur, Matthew Cracknell, Grant Hooker, Mark Blakley and Justin Heyworth. The Brooks Feed and C. AW. teams travel to Bowmanville for buzzer. Port was on top 5:00 into the first period as "smooth" Ryan Picard scored on a nice break- away pass from Aron Royle. It was a two on one break with Aron sliding the puck over to Ryan, as he just tucked it up in the corner, as well as himself. He got up though with a smile on his face. The other assist going to Todd Smart. Port was able to put the next one in as well, with a Slick Sean McEnaney "deking" out both defensemen and sliding a backhand along the ice to beat the Peterborough goalie. Nice passes from Scott Wylie and Lindsay Parry were combined to make the goal come alive. However, Peterborough didn't give up! A minute and 55 seconds later, they came back to make the score 2-1. Port scored less than half way through the second with Jeff Card scoring on a hard "snapper" that beat the goalie high enough to ding the crossbar and trickle over the line. The goal was assisted by Sean McEnaney, but it did not show on the game sheet, nice pass Sean! Port went off between the se- cond and the third with the team on cruise control. It cost them as they let Peter- borough score one more time with less than 30 seconds into the third period. Port held them off the scareboard the rest of the evening. There were a few little tussels here and there after the game with 3 players from the Sport- sland team and 4 players from the Peterborough team getting game misconducts. Port Perry's next home game is another playoff tilt against that rough team from Beaverton on Wednesday February 7 at 7:40 p.m. it gave the MoJacks an impor- tant 3-1lead. The power play kicked into gear at the mid-point as the Mo- Jacks enjoyed a two man advan- tage, and Steve Connors un- loaded from 30 feet out through traffic in front of Goreski. Tay- lor drew the assist on this one. And three minutes, Giaca- lone was set up alone in front by Darrin Lee and Jim Gibbens and he made no mistake to give the MoJacks a commanding 5-1 lead. Axemen cut that to 5-2 at 13:31 but that's the way way the game ended as Tony Sortino in the MoJacks net shut the door the rest of the way. This was a chippy game with tempers flaring on nume- orus occasions and ref Dwayne Phillips sent a steady parade of players to the sin bin. Axemen took 40 minutes and one mis-conduct, and the MoJacks 38 and one mis- conduct. SLAPSHOTS: MoJacks for- ward John Lally missed both weekend games as he is still bothered with a sore shoulder.
