Serving Durham and the Local Community since 1976 -- OPEN SATURDAYS -- PONTIAC BUICK LIMITED 10 Vanedward Drive, Port Perrry 985-8474 Police crack shoplifting ring working in Oshawa Centre A three week investigation by Durham Police has broken what Police describe as a shop- lifting ring that operated at the Oshawa Centre. Two adults and two youth- ful offenders have been arrest- ed and are facing numerous charges including possession of stolen property, theft under $1,000, counselling to commit theft and conspiracy. Riyaz Nurani, 32, of Rex- dale, and Aaron Maurice Szi- manski, 18, of Oshawa have been charged. Restaurant owner charged with arson On October 15th, 1989 a fire broke out at a restaurant in downtown Oshawa, known as "15 King St. W." located at the same address. The fire had been set in a storage area on the east side of the restaurant. The building received approximately $30,000.00 damage and $20,000.00 to the contents. As a result of an extensive in- vestigation conducted by Durham _Regional Police, Arson Squad, Fire Marshall's Investigators and Oshawa Fire Department, the, manager/operator, Nicholaos Tsigaridas, 26 years, 55 William Street, East, Unit No. 513, Oshawa has been arrested and charged with two counts of Arson and one count of Cause Fire wilfully. Mr. Tsigaridas was released on an Undertaking to ap- pear in Oshawa Court on Thurs- day, February 15, 1990. IF YOUR AD WAS HERE Over 20.000 people could . have read it this week. That's a lot of potential customers for your business. For Advertising Made Easy call the PORT PERRY STAR 985-7383 The two youths cannot be identified. Police report that over the last several months, as many as 30 young people had been "re- cruited" to steal merchandise for stores in the Oshawa Cen- Stolen goods were turned over to employees who worked Letters to the editor at the T-Shirt Gallery. Lists of items for theft would be provided to the youths. The investigation into this ring was conducted by officers in the Criminal Branch, the Youth Branch and security staff in the Bay and Eaton stores in the Centre. Missing the gift of life To the Editor: Well unborn kids, so much for life on earth. You will have to face the butcher of abortion because some of us feel they need "many many acres to roam and endless skies in which to fly." I wonder if these same people ever stop to think about the life of the unborn and if left to nature, all the wonderful and meaningful things they would contribute to the human race. Who knows, maybe they would teach us how to co-operate and love one another so we could make a better life for everyone. What difference does it make if you have 1/10th of an acre or 1000 acres to roam, if you don't have loving hearts to share it with. Abortion is killing helpless, lov- ing hearts. The human race is becoming so selfish we are miss- ing the gift of life. Betty Foote R.R. 1 Nestleton. MP has responsibility To the Editor: An open letter to Ross Steven- son - M.P. (Durham) 2 On October 5, 1989 the Minister of Transport, Benoit Bouchard stated in the House of Commons, "We have immediately started discussions, and I am quite con- fident that we will reach an agree- ment to transfer the (VIA) line Havelock - Toronto to the GO Transit system in Ontario." Why did he make this state- ment? Quite clearly it was intend- ed to deflect the certain pressure that was being brought to bear by the association. On October 21, 1989 the Ontario Transportation Minister, Bill Wrye, stated 'I want to categorically deny there are any secret, open or up front negotia- tions about taking over the Toron- to - Havelock run," There have been none, (negotiations) and are none. Mr. Bouchard continued the ruse when, at a conservative fund-raiser he said 'You ask me J ------ PORT PERRY auto glass & trim ---- WITH THIS COUPON on January 15 whether a train is still running." Well Mr. Steven- son, we're asking. Is it right for a Member of Parliament, let alone a Minister of Canada, to distort the truth and intentionally mislead the Cana- dian people? A request was made last week to bring this issue to the attention of House of Commons, a request which you refused, saying no evidence could be found to sup- port these statements. M.P.'s have a responsibility Mr. Steven- son, a responsibility you have chosen to ignore. The association lost two valuable months in pursuing the privatization plan because of Mr. Bouchard's statements. Govern- ments are supposed to help the people, not stand in their way. The people of Durham have a right to know!
