Blackstock Arena due for safety check Scugog Township Council was informed last week that the Blackstock Arena requires an inspection by a professional engineer. According to Earl Cuddie, it is mandatory every five years for an arena to have this safety check. Any arena that is older than 10 years, must be inspect- e The Industrial Health and Safety Branch requires that a report on the arena be sent to them by May 15. In 1988, and 1989 a total of nine arenas were closed by the Ministry of Labour due to struc- tural inadequacies. January 29 is the 60th wedding anniversary for Ralph and Vera Veitch. Ralph and Vera lived most of their married life just - west of Epsom. So we all send our congratulations and best wishes. We hope Ralph will soon feel bet- ter but colds and flu seem to be the order of the day. The Uxbridge Co-Op Banquet was a gala affair. Many from Ep- som enjoyed the banquet at the Maples. Fay and Don Simmonds and family had lunch on Sunday with Beth and Doug Wilson and family. Postmas were away this weekend. They travelled to Sud- bury where Jeff and Steve com- peted in a swim meet while their sisters enjoyed a visit with Doug and Beth Wilson and family. Frank Van Veghel called on Don and Stella Asling on Monday evening. On Friday Don and Stella called on Mrs. Hazel Asling of Ajax. Ken and Beth Catherwood were overnight guests with her mother Mrs. Ruth Ashton on Saturday. Sandra Ashton of Oakwood and her fiancee Bob Ludyka were sup- per guests with Grandma Ashton on Friday. Obituary Thomas Russell Eden, 79 Thomas Russell Eden entered into rest at the Port Perry Hospital on Tuesday, October 24, 1989. He was in his 80th year. Tom was born in England on April 27, 1910. He came to Canada in 1913 with his mother and his older brother Alfred. His father deceased. Tom lived in Toronto until 1920, then moved to Embro, Ont., where he lived on a farm with family and friends. In 1928, he moved to Mt. Bridges and Kerwood, Ontario area working as a farm hand and where he met Margaret Bramley. They married in 1936 and in 1938 they moved to a farm on Scugog Island. Police investigate local break-ins Durham Region Police are investigating two break-ins which took place last week at businesses in the Port Perry area. Police say thieves smashed through a window at the Donut Gallery on the Oshawa Road the night of January 26-27. A small amount of money was missing after the cash reg- ister was forced open. Fire causes extensive damage A Rosa Street house in Port Perry sustained heavy dama in a fire that broke out 6:30 P on January 26. The fire at 274 Rosa started in a stairwell and gutted the basement area. There was smoke and wa- ter damages to the triplex main floor as well. There were no injuries. An attempt by the thieves to break open a safe was not suc- cessful. And some time during the evening of January 26, the Brooks Feed Store on Highway 7A was entered, according to po- lice. A side door leading to the storage area was pried open. Once inside, a window into the office was smashed. The office was ransacked and a small amount of loose change and articles of clothing were reported stolen. And a Port Perry resident who parked his car on Lorne St. Saturday evening got a rude surprise. Somebody smashed open the right front window of the 1990 Mustang and walked away with a dozen cassette tapes. Margaret passed away in June 1977. Tom retired in 1978. He enjoyed snowmobiling and was a long time member of the Port Perry Snowmobile Club. He sold his house in 1981 and moved in with his daughter and son-in-law (Beverley and Rick Thompson). Thomas Eden will be sadly missed by his three daughters, Shirley and her husband Jim Newman of Sask., Beverley and her husband Rick Thompson of Port Perry and Virginia Parker of Nestleton. He was the loving grandfather of 9 grandchildren and 10 great- grandchildren. Brother of Bert of Whitby, Bob of Toronto, Margaret of Ottawa and predeceased by Alfred of Port Perry, Edgar of Oshawa, May of Orillia and Douglas of Toronto. A funeral service was held at the Wagg Funeral Home in Port Perry on Saturday, October 28, 1989. Rev. A. Woolcock officiated. The many floral arrangements and memorial donations were gratefully appreciated.
