_-- 30 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, January 30, 1990 Lions host for Day on the Ice Port Perry Lions Club held its first annual "Day on the Ice", Saturday, and it was a success. The fishing began at 8 a.m. and continued until 4 p.m., af- ter which the weighing in took place to determine prize win- ners. Prize winners included Art Pomeroy who won $50 for the largest fish, Bill Craig won $25 for the largest perch, and Keith Beare won $26 for the most fish caught. After the weighing was com- plete, the fisherman were treat- ed to dinner, where the cheques and trophies were presented to the winners. The cost for the event was $35 which included transporta- tion to and from the hut, the use of a heated hut, bait, lines, cof- fee, prizes, dinner, and an end- less supply of fish stories. Not a fish tale Twenty-seven year old Robert Anderson of Brantford has been named the 1989 All-Ontario Angler of the Year by the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters and the "Molson Export" Big Fish Contest. Anderson was selected from all contestants in the "Molson Ex- port" Big Fish Contest for establishing a new Canadian and Ontario angling record by cat- ching a 31.00-pound (14.06 kg) Brown Trout. The fish was caught in Lake Ontario in October 1989. With his entry, Anderson easi- ly won the Catch and Eat Brown Trout class with a lead of more than five pounds over the second place Brown. As a proponent of live release fishing, Anderson returns all his catches to the water, but made an exception when he realized the trout's ex- ceptional size. Anderson knew that Brown Trout, particularly the big ones he was after, are easily spooked. In- stead of using deep-trolling equip- PAUL VAN CAMP Chartered Accountant 204 Casimir St. 985-9725 ment or keeping his bait close to the boat, he let out "lots of line . behind the boat"...and it worked! After two hours of trolling, the giant slammed into Anderson's lure and tore line from his reel. The fish was so big he assumed it must be a King Salmon, but several minutes later, when his partner tried to get the giant in an undersized landing net, he knew what he had -- a Brown-Trout more than three feet long! In announcing the presentation of Ontario's most prestigious angling award, Dr. Terry Quin- ney, Adminstrator of the "Molson Export" Big Fish Contest, said, "Rob Anderson has punched great holes in the myth that breaking records is just luck. He knew what he was after, he specifically targetted for it, and he succeeded in a fashion that sur- passed his own wildest dreams." The "Molson Export" Big Fish Contest is a program of the On- tario Federation of Anglers and Hunters. PORT PERRY LoL 1B7 * INCOME TAX * FINANCIAL PLANNING * SMALL BUSINESS [.) Pee Wees get momentum for 2-1 win over Cobourg The Pee Wee B's kept their momentum after beating Peter- borough when they met Cobourg. Fri. night and won 2-1. This makes their 2nd win in their round robin playoffs. With only 31% minutes of play, and a scramble at the blueline, Jason Phillips came up big. He made a quick pass to Daryl Bourgeois who took a hard shot. Brent Harper was out in front and wasted no time picking up the re- bound and putting Port on the scoreboard. With 1 minute left in the first period, Cobourg broke out and came in on our net on a breakaway. Scot Prechitko made an awesome save. 15 seconds later Cobourg was alone out in front and again Scotty kept them off the board. Two minutes into the second Cobourg popped in the tying goal. It wasn't long though before Kent Taylor notched Port's winning goal with a shot that set the puck in the top corner. A nice play set up by Mike Labanovich and Ian Shirgley. The third period was Scotty's in net when Cobourg couldn't get it past his stick or his glove. A great game, Scot! Port had to settle for a tie in their 3rd playoff game Sunday night against Cobourg. Port drew first blood as Kent Taylor sent the puck to Mike Labanovich as he headed up center ice and made a fine pass to Ian Shrigley who made one of his patented fake left IF YOUR AD WAS HERE Over 20,000 people could have read it this week. Cobourg then scored 2 unanswered goals ending the first period 2-1 in their favour. Andrew Jones got the puck roll- ing midway through the second period to Jason Reid. Jason fired the puck glove high to the goalie but he wasn't secure in his catch and let it fall in front of a waiting Matt Hobbs and he put it top cor- ner high tying up the game. Both teams had many chances to score but Cobourg had the best opportunity as Port was 3 men: - short, but due to some good penal- ty killing and some awesome saves by Scot Prechitko it re- mained tied. Halfway through the round- robin series Port is sitting with 5 out of 6 points. Junior tune-up On Sunday, the Port Perry I.G.A. Juniors travelled north to Ennismore for their final league game. With the next 3 weekends taken up for tournaments this was a fine tune-up. The ladies started off slowly as they normally do but were soon able to find their teammates with passes. As Ennismore is one of the weaker teams in our league, the players were able to practice their passing and the comments heard during the game were that the ladies did a great job. The final score was 12 to 2 and only one of these goals was unassisted. Every other goal scored had 2 assists attached to it. Port Perry I.G.A. totally dominated this game and did it in a style of play that kept them out of the penalty box. This is the kind of ringette the coaching staff likes to watch these young ladies play. Scoring for Port Perry 1.G.A. were Mandee Porter 1 assist; Val Payne 1 assist; Danielle Lally 4 assists; Jennifer King 2 assists; 2 goals; JoAnn Zaal 2 assists; 2 goals; Kendra (Sleepy) McCrea 4 assists; 1 goal; Kristin Arm- strong 4 assists; 3 goals; and Den- na Lovering 4 assists; 4 goals. Although some of the players playing defence did not get any assists, without their work in front of the net this game would not have been won by such a margin. Great stops by Bristol Sleep and good work by the defence sure helped put this game away. Great game ladies. See you in Ottawa on Feb. 3! /¢ e900 J) 47 * POLITICAL 3 .
