Diet is also a major contribu- tor to heart disease and stroke. The foundation says the risks can be lowered by eating foods low in fat and high in complex carbohydrates. The foundation has even pub- lished a cookbook, The Light- hearted Cookbook, that is filled with heart healthy recipes. Author Anne Lindsay has come up with a mixture of deli- cious combinations including mushroom, broccoli and onion pizza; oat bran banana-raisin muffins; and szechuan orange- ginger chicken. The cookbook is available at four local stores -- From My Heart, House of Howard, Dor- Jean Fashions and The Port Perry Star. The book sells for $14.95 and all the proceeds go to the Heart and Stroke Founda- tion. Gwen Taylor said the book is available in Port Perry year- round, but it may be going up in pricein the near future. Other ways of reducing the risks of heart disease and stroke include checking for high blood pressure and cholesterol, and participating in regular physical activity. Many of the deaths could have been avoided by getting the patient to the hospital earli- er, therefore the foundation says it's imperative to know the signs of a heart attack or stroke. - Indicators that a heart attack may be coming on include an uncomfortable pressure, squeezing, fullness or discom- fort in the center of the chest be- hind the breastbone which may spread to the shoulder, neck or arms, and may range from se- vere pain to mild discomfort. Warning signs of a stroke in- clude sudden dramatic weak- ness or numbness of the face, arm and/or leg on one side of the body. The pain often only lasts a few minutes. Other indicators include a temporary loss of speech, or trouble in speaking or under- standing s h; tempora dimness or loss of vision; sud- den, severe, unusual headaches or a change in the pattern of headaches. But the foundation says there is news about strokes. y strokes can be prevent- ed if high blood pressure is de- tected and treated. Stroke- related deaths have declined five percent a year since 1980, the foundation says. The 32nd annual fundraising campaign kicks off Thursday, Feb. 1.
