To get an estimate of what is called scasonal efficien- cy, the technician factors in additional heat losses as the unit cycles on and off to maintain the home's temperature. Adding a flue damper and an electric ig- nition often increases seasonal efficiency. Typical ways of improv- ing your furnace's efficien- cy include insulating the warm air ducts, adjusting and cleaning oil nozzles, changing air filters, clean- ing registers and adjusting registers for proper airflow. Once you have improved your furnace's efficiency, you can take steps to fur- ther reduce air leakage in your home. Air leakage through poorly sealed doors, windows, and cracks in walls and ceilings is the major source of heat loss in many Ontario homes. Air leakage can also lead to condensation problems in the exterior walls and roof space of your home. A thorough job of weatherstripping and caulking can reduce your heating bill by 10 to 15 per- cent. Weatherstripping can be applied to any joint where two surfaces meet, but it must be free to move. Caulking, on the other hand, is best applied where two surfaces do not have to move, such as the interior edges of windows and door frames. If you are going to keep your present heating system there are many ways you can reduce air leakage and improve energy efficiency. Start with lowering the ther- mostat when you are not home. During cold weather, rooms that are not used fre- quently should be closed off and the heating units turn- ed off. Heat escapes quickly through a single thickness of glass. By adding storm windows, a dead air space is created which stops the direct transfer of heat to the RTH ~~ = 'RIDGE - PORT PERRY PLAZA (a16) 985-9777 FAX 985-9161 PORT PERRY, CASTLE HARBOUR. Custom Designed, Quality Built. Large greenhouse kitchen, outside air. Windows with a double or triple thermal thickness of glass will have the same effect. Fireplace dampers should be closed when there is no fire. Open dampers allow warm air from the room to flow continuously up the chimney. Radiators painted with metallic paints such as aluminum lose about 20 per- cent of their heating capaci- ty if the paint surface deteriorates. Apply a fresh coat of enamel to regain the full heating capacity. By getting your furnace checked every winter and by taking steps to reduce air leakage, you will save on your heating bills, and also feel more comfortable in your home.
