When a system can do the same job using less fuel, then it has increased its energy efficiency. Im- provements to a heating system are possible in the thermostatic controls, in the network of pipes or ducts that carry heated air, water, or steam, and in the operation of the heating unit itself. Improvements to a fur- nace's efficiency should start with a measurement of your furnace's current combustion efficiency. This step requires the help of a professional. When you call a heating and cooling specialist make sure you understand what the technician will do when he arrives at your home. Most companies charge by the hour, however, some will charge a base hourly you an estimate; others will actually perform some work while they are in your home. To test your furnace's ef- ficiency, a technician measures the temperature of the exhaust gases in the flue or vent. If the temperature is too high, too much heat is travelling up the flue and a tune-up is usually recommended. The technician also measures the amount of smoke and carbon dioxide in the exhaust if you have an oil system; he measures the amount of carbon diox- ide and carbon monoxide in the exhaust if you have a gas system. These readings and the temperature in the flue indicate how well your furnace is using the fuel. These tests also measure the steady-state efficiency of your heating system.
