Wood stoves source of efficient heat (From page 1) heat). Pyrolysis is a gradual and undetectable hazard no home-owner, vendor or purchaser has any way of knowing that it is happening. Specifically, when a wood stove is fired-up it radiates heat in all directions. That heat penetrates nearby walls, floors and ceilings to the point that moisture and other substances in the wood evaporate, inducing a chemical change. This chemical change causes the wood to carbonize so that over time, temperatures needed to ignite the wood get continually lower until fire results. Faulty installation of a wood stove and the proximi- ty of combustible materials, (that is materials which may easily catch fire), are often the causes. Because of its structural soundness, the sole survivor of a fire is very often the wood stove that in its own way caused the fire. Because there are never any clues suggesting the possibility of combustion one can, at best, examine the area surrounding the wood stove and ask that the appliance be inspected. Your local fire marshall, a qualified building inspector or a responsible retailer or installer can inspect your wood stove. The CSA Installation Code stipulates that there should be a four-foot radius around the wood stove in which there are no com- bustibles such as carpets, furniture or anything made of wood. If the design of the room makes a four-foot radius impossible, then cer- tified shielding panels can be used. Shielding panels and an airspace have to be installed behind the wood stove, again in accordance toregulations. The flue pipe of a wood stove is also sub- ject to these regulations. If a wood stove does not comply with the Ontario Fire Code, a building per- mit is required to correct the installation. Failure to comply can result in a fine for every day that the pro- blem is left uncorrected. In- spectors should be following the recently revised 1984 CSA Installation Code, copies of which can be pur- chased from the CSA (416/ 747-4000, catalogue code number B365). Whether you own a house, or plan to in the future the addition of a wood stove can be a worthwhile invest- ment. However this invest- ment is only as good as it is safe.
