The Environment by Janet Banting This week there are more environmental groups to tell you about, two of which I learned about from David Suzuki's Satur- day column in the Toronto Star. These groups are fairly new, having been started up within the past year or year-and-a-half. As well, please note that "The Environmental Resource Book" mentioned in last week's column is now available at the Scugog Memorial Library for people who would like to learn about a variety of groups operating all over Ontario. A national group will be of particular interest to teenagers and youth is the Environmental Youth Alliance. This group is based in British Columbia but its purpose is to link up high school environmental groups across Canada. The Alliance will be put- ting out a newsletter in February and has a conference and field trips planned. For more information, write to Jeff Gibbs at 102 West 40th Ave., Vancouver, B.C. V5Y 2R2. Grassroots Albany is a group from Toronto. It was started up by a group of neighbours with the idea of cleaning up the en- vironment right in their own neighbourhood, initiating a letter- writing campaign with politicians at all levels, and taking on specific individual projects such as discouraging the use of styrofoam cups in the workplace, buying food in bulk to avoid unnecessary packaging, and buying recycled paper in bulk. These people sound like real go-getters - they are not just sit- ting around waiting for someone else to do all the work! Write to them c/o Amanda McConnell, 211 Albany St., Toronto, M5R 3C7 and they will send you a kit on how to start up a local group and how to lobby politicians. The kit conains sample letters. A group right in Durham Region that is in need of new volunteers from this area is the Public Liaison Committee for the Durham Waste Management Master Plan. The P.L.C. is working to make the public aware of the existence of a long-term Durham-only Master Plan for garbage for the years 1997 - 2016, and is holding a series of meetings around the Region in order to do this. Everyone is encouraged to come to the one in Port Perry on January 24 to learn more about waste management planning in general, and the Master Plan in particular. Whether you would like to join the committee or just want to learn more about where YOUR garbage will be going in the future, come to the public meeting at the Port Perry High School at 7:30 p.m. on January 24. If you decide to start up a group focusing on a specific issue, or just get a group you're already involved in to tackle a par- ticular concern, it will encourage you to know that small groups can achieve impressive results! It isn't necessary to have a large group in order to get things accomplished - better to have a small nunber of organized and task-oriented people who can be counted on to follow through on what they promise to do. Even if you are a little reluctant to jump in with both feet, you can still tackle something small. Suggest to your group (whatever it happens to be) that coffee and meals no longer be served in disposable cups and dishes. Set a good example by "lugging a mug" with you to your meetings, for example. We don't all have to join existing environmental groups or start up new ones in order to become more responsible about cleaning up the environment, but we do all have to "'do our part." Many of the changes that are going to be needed over the next decase WILL require some new attitudes on everyone's part. The following isn't a new saying, but its meaning is very timely now: "If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the problem!" Motorists can prepare against this frustrating situation by using a graphite based lock lubricant. If Canada Trust /R PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, Janvary 23, 1990 -- 49 Avoid frozen door locks getting the car washed when the temperatures plunge, place masking tape or adhesive ta over the keyhole. Also take the precaution of drying the weather stripping around doors and trunk frames after a car wash. A frozen lock can be thawed by squirting de-icer into the lock. Another trick, says CAA Toronto, is to insert a key heated by a match or lighter. To avoid burn- ing yourself, wear gloves or hold the key with pliers. lealtor 3 i TEN ACRE HORSE & HOBBY -- $629,000. 2500 sq.ft., 4 bedrm. home with family and rec rm.
