PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, Janvary 23, 1990 -- 31 Jr. C. MoJacks suffer two straight losses For just the first time this season, the Port Perry MoJacks have lost two straight hockey games. But it doesn't mean any- thing as far as where the team will finish in the Central Junior C League final standings. The MoJacks had second place locked up last Thursday evening when they played host to the Bowmanville Eagles. In a fast-paced, intense game, the visitors took full ad- vantage of a couple of momen- tary lapses by the MoJacks to skate away with a 5-4 win. Andon Sunday, in a rare af- ternoon game in Lakefield, the MoJacks went down to defeat at the hands of the Chiefs by the same 5-4 score. The Chiefs, who have struggled most of the season and are now in a battle for the fi- nal playoff spot, were able to ice a complete team. For the MoJacks, Jim Gib- bens had a pair of goals, with singles to Rob Metcalfe and John Harman. The Chiefs were led by Ja- mie Reynolds with two goals and an assist. The MoJacks did get some good news over the weekend, as the OHA lifted a suspension against talented defenseman Steve Connors. He has been on the shelf for the last several games after be- ing called for lightly bumping a referee during a discussion over a MoJack goal that was dis- allowed. Whether Connors deserved the call is a matter of opinion. In any event, it's nice to see him back in uniform with playoffs just around the corner. In last Thursday night's game against the Eagles in front of a big crowd at the Scu- gog Arena, the MoJacks learned an important lesson should they meet these guys in again in post-season play. Fall asleep for a moment and the Eagles will strike in a hurry. "That's essentially what happened as the MoJacks went down 5-4 in a game they very easily could have won. But a brief lapse by the Mo- Jacks in their own end of the pond early in the third period allowed the Eagles to tie the game and then score the go- ahead goal, all in the span of 61 seconds. Sniper George Pithie got the equalizer at the 31 second mark of the final stanza, and 61 seconds later as the Ragies ap- plied pressure, the MoJacks were unable to clear the disc and it wound up on the stick of Glenn Campbell who whipped it past Tony Sortino. The MoJacks applied some heavy duty pressure of their own in the latter half of the peri- od in an effort to tie the score, but they couldn't get the puck past Scott Webster. Eagles took an early 2-0 lead by the 5:10 mark of the first as the MoJacks appeared slug- ish. g But they started to shake the cob webs free at the mid- IE LL EU I IRL ~~ Whenever the Port Perry MoJacks and Bowmanville Ea- Taylor (16 gles get together for a Junior C hockey game, you can ex- pect the action fast and furious, as in this photo where Ea- gle netminder Scott Webster had to be sharp to stop Todd point when Warren Geer clicked on a power play with help from Menzies and Har- man. Early in the second, it was the MoJacks who took control of the game as Menzies, using his wingers as decoys drilled a ris- ing shot from 25 feet out that found the corner. Four minutes later, the line of Jim Vernon, Todd Taylor and Darrin Lee went to work with strong fore-checking and Ver- non jammed a loose puck in fron the side of the crease. And less than a minute af- ter that MoJacks went up 4-2 when Harman slipped around an Eagle defender and the puck seemed to roll under the goalie who attempted a poke check. MoJacks had a wonderful chance to salt this game away when the Eagles took a four minute minor at the 13 minute mark, but an errant pass was picked off by Dave Fairey and he scored a short-handed mark- er for the visitors to make things 4-3. As hockey games go, this was a fast, wide open, hard hit- ting affair, though both teams had trouble finishing plays. De- spite the high-speed tempo, Mo- Jacks had 26 shots and the Ea- gles 24. Though there is no love lost between the teams, they stuck to hockey for the most part, al- though things turned a shade nasty late in the game when the Eagles towering captain Dean Baumhauer caught John Har- man with a high stick to the hel- met, and was assessed a penal- ty. A few minutes later, Har- man returned the favour, with a stick the mid-section that sent Baumhauer to the ice. Harman escaped without a penalty, and Baumhauer had to be helped from the ice. But he was back out a minute or so lat- er, apparently none the worse for wear, taking runs at any- bodyina white jersey. MoJacks were hurting for this game with two of their tougher forwards, John Lally and Len Giacalone on the shelf nursing bruises. Kevin Gibson, another for- ward who likes the tough sled- ding, was out with the flu bug. Steve Durham played with a bad arm that hampered his usual robust style and tough checking. LAE ) The Eagles came out on top 5-4 in this last regu- lar season meeting of the two teams, but If they get together in the playoffs, watch out. (see story for detalls) Defenseman Steve Con- nors is out with a suspension and Chris Edmonston with a knee injury that may have spelled the end ofhis season. The MoJacks need this guys back in the line-up come playoff time. Warren Geer - spent most of the game on de- fense, which takes away from his splendid offensive skills. SLAPSHOTS: 'T'his is the final week of the Central Junior C regular schedule, and the Mo- Jacks, who can finish nowhere but second, visit Uxbridge to- night (Jan. 23) and then wrap things up at home on Saturday Scugog Mens League night (Jan.27) against Cobourg for an 8:00 PM faceoff. These games don't mean much to the MoJacks, but they are hugely important for the Bruins and the Cougers. The Uxbri boys are in the middle of a ding-dong battle with Ajax for third spot, and the Cougers are battling with Lake- field and Little Britain for the fi- nal playoff spot. Six of the seven teams will make the playoffs, with the league leader have the choice of the bottom three teams. Second place Port Perry will choose sec- ond, and the third place team will take whoever is left. Shooters on rampage Game one on the day was a one- sided white-wash as Sportsland skated to a 10-3 win over last place Crandell's. Leading the way for Sportsland was Bob Beveridge with an ex- cellent 1 goal, 5 assist day. Following him were Rob Evans 3 goals, 2 assists, Fred Moffatt 2 goals, 3 assists, Glen Hudson 2 goals, Larry Page 1 goal, 1 assist, and Randy Prosser 1 goal. Other assists went to Dave Harrison 2, Brad Hurst 2 and Dick Martin one. For Crandell's, it was Rick Hope 2 goals, 1 assist, Phil Wamsley 1 goal, Tim Kane and John Robertson each had 1 assist. In Game Two, Blanchard's made a great comeback from 3-0 to rally and beat Norton's 7-5. Scoring for Blanchard's were Richie LeFort 2 goals, 1 assist, Ken Davison 1 goal, 1 assist, Kei- jo Kinnunen 1 goal, 1 assist, Ivan Geer 1 goal, 1 assist, Dan Carty and Jim Duncan had one goal euch. Assists to Dan Horner 2, Mike Driscoll 2 and John Kotar- ba one. Fighting along for Norton's were Mark Jobb 3 goals, 2 assists, and Donovan Smith 2 goals. Ad- ding assists were Brian Samis 4, Reg Templeman and Mark Burgef 1 apiece. Game Three was the lowest scoring affair of the day, as Larocque upset second place Anderson's 4-1. Scorers for Larocque were Ed Olsen 1 goal, 1 assist, Bill Haynes 1 goal, 1 assist, Kevin Reid and Paul Van Camp each had 1 goal. Larry Jackson picked up 2 assists while Wayne Norton added one. The lone marker for Anderson's was Jason Warner from Larry Pilkey and Terry Flieler. Troy Glazier played a great game between the pipes for Larocque as only one shot slipped past him. The final game of the day was another high scoring one in which Compton defeated J & D 7-2. Counting for Compton were Clarence Stephenson 2 goals, 2 assists, Wayne Fox 1 goal, 2 assist, Jim Beatty 1 goal, 2 assists, Dave Mann 1 goal, 1 assist, Bob Lee and Carl Durward 1 goal each.
