J ia crea il PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, January 23, 1990 -- 13 Former resident to work CW.S. KITCHENS "Traditional & European Lines. *Contractor Specials. *Quick Delivery with Professional Installation. in Guyana three months On Aug. 1, Rob Dantzer will jet grubazk on the adventure of his ife. The former Port Perry native will travel to Guyana, South America for three months of very intense physical and men- tal labor with Youth Challenge International. Guyana, located in the north- ern part of South America -- bor- dering on Venezuela, Surinam and Brazil -- has a population of 800,000 people. (Double the population of Durham Region.) The fourth-year systems en- gineering student at the Uni- versity of Waterloo will be trav- elling with 35 other Canadian students and will be joined by other students from Costa Rica and Guyana. Their mission will be to un- dertake medical and scientific studies, as well as doing some community work. The medical part of the excur- sion involves screening villag- ers for cataract problems. Toronto General Hospital's top ophthalmologist and head nurse will then fly to Guyana to operate on the cataract pa- tients. Scientific studies will include doing biological and hydropow- ersurveys. "The biological survey may encompass counting plants and snakes right in the jungle," 23- year-old Rob told the Star. He and the other students taking part in the Youth Chal- lenge International (YCI) ex- cursion will also study the flow rate of rivers to see if power can be generated from the rivers current. Rob said many of the rivers may have the capability to gen- erate power. The problem may lie on whether the river is close to any developing area where power is needed. : Community work will include repairing a school, putting in plumbing and helping with the construction 'of a bridge, Rob said. Rob first heard about YCI from a classmate who had been on a previous excursion. "I'd like to see what it's like in other countries," Rob said, com- menting that Guyana is still in the developing stages. In the Matter of Subsection 2 of Section 35 of the Assessment Act Extension of Time for Return of Annual Assessment Rolls Pursuant to section 35 of the Assessment Act, | hereby further extend to the 27th day of February, 1990, the day upon which the assessment rolls for the year 1989 are required to be returned pursuant to the provisions of the said Act in all municipali- ties and localities in the Province of Ontario except the City of Welland and the municipalities located in the Regional Municipal- ity of Sudbury, the County of "I'd like to go to medical school after I graduate (as a sys- tems engineer)," he said. "It (the excursion) won't be an easy time. It will be stressful, but I hope it gives me some insight into whether being a doctor is for me or not." YCI offers several excusions of this nature each year. Rob said YCI expects each participant to be excellent swimmers and know first-aid techniques. Knowledge on auto- motive repairs and natural sur- vival skills is also an asset. To ensure that each student would make a good representa- tive from Canada, they are put through a grueling selection weekend. The weekend is designed to show each participant what they can expect while in Guya- na. Often, the selection week- end weeds out the students who may not be able to cope with the program. Rob said the projected cost of the trip per student ranges around $10,000. YCI is funded by the Canadi- an Internation Development Agency. But CIDA does not ful- ly sponsor each participants trip. Rob is expected to raise $3,000 through sponsorships. The money cannot come out of the participant's own funds. Rob said YCI is always look- ing for participants for future excursions. To be eligible, par- ticipants must be between 17- 26 years old. To obtain an application form, telephone 971-9846 or write to Youth Challenge Inter- national, 11 Soho Street, Toron- to, Ontario.
