Recycling hot topic atconvention by Lillian Harper P.R.O. The January meeting of Honeydale W.1. was held on Mon- day, Jan. 8 with a reasonably good attendance, considering the number of folks who have been ill with the flu. There also seems to be some confusion about changing our day of meeting from the first Thursday to the first Monday of the month. Our president, Mary Cannon welcomed all present. The Roll Call "Name an old Custom", was answered with a wide variety of interesting answers, which brought back memories of many forgotten customs. During the business part of the meeting, Mary gave an excellent report of the 87th annual conven- tion, which was attended by 243 delegates from across Ontairo. The subject of recycling was discussed at great length at the convention. It was also stated that Women's Institute is the largest women's organization in the Rural Organization Specialist named Effective January 8, Sandra Campbell will fill the contract position of Rural Organization Specialist for the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food in Durham West. Sandra was raised on a dairy farm near Moose Creek, Stor- mont County. She was a dedicated 4-H and Junior Farmer member, and spent two summers with Rural Organizations and Services Branch co-ordinating the 4-H Regional Conference. This past spring she graduated from the University of Guelph with a degree in Agricultural Business. Since graduation she has been employed by Market Develop- ment Branch, Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food. Sandra is looking forward to meeting and working with you at 4-H and farm organization events. Employer health tax replaces OHIP Ontario residents no longer are required to pay OHIP premiums. The premium system has been replaced by a new Employer Health Tax. The tax is paid at a graduated rate ranging from .98 percent to 1.98 percent annually depending on total remuneration paid to employees. Employers with an annual payroll over $400,000, are world. Several thank you cards were received for Christmas remem- brances, also personal "thank- yous" from those members who had received life memberships at our last meeting, having been members for at least 25 years. Committees were named to look after plans for the District Annual and our own annual meeting in May. The Motto - "Do not resent growing old - many are denied the privilege" - was ably taken by Helen Thomson, who gave several good readings, including one on household hints, and old time home remedies, many of which apply quite well today. Ethel Robertson gave an infor- mative reading concerning the founding of Women's Institute in 1897 at Stoney Creek, Ontario, which has mushroomed into the worldwide organization that we know today. Helen conducted an interesting contest on old song titles, which we all enjoyed, followed by a love- ly lunch and social half hour. We were reminded that there will be an auction sale at our next meeting, Feb. 5.
