"mw 22 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, January 16, 1990 Waterloo defeats Port to Over the past weekend, the Pro- vincial A Tweens, sponsored by Allens Siding Products, entertain- ed the home town fans to some ex- citing ringette and came away with the silver medal. After dropping Ajax 9-0 last Monday evening, the girls brought it all home with a tie to start it off with Waterloo 5-5, a win over Dorchester 5-2, a tie with Sudbury 8-8 on Sunday and a loss in the championship game 11-6 to Waterloo. Monday's game was a tune-up for the weekend, as everyone en- joyed playing different positions and taking part in the scoring. Tracy Pelow did not score any points but she sure kept Ajax off the board as time and time again, she kicked out some great shots. Scoring went as follows: Michelle Fitzpatrick 2 assists, Kim Poppleton 2 goals 1 assist, Jennifer Morden 1 assist, Aman- da Webb 1 each, Amy Parliament 2 each, Megan Marlowe 2 goals, 1 assist, Karen Kett 1 goal 2 assists, Tammy Pillman 2 assists, and Shannon Fox 1 goal. Our first game of the home tournament put us against Waterloo, who we have played numerous times in years gone by. This was a very fast game and much to our surprise, we had them 5-2, but couldn't hold on. One girl for Waterloo was able to notch 4 of their goals and gave us a lot of difficulty. Tracy played her usual strong game and robb- 52 Water St., Port Perry PHONE 985-4241 ed them of a lot of goals. All of the girls helped Kim and Jennifer on defense and they all made it tough around the Port net. Saturday night, we headed for Oakwood to play our second game which was against Dorchester. This game was a rough one as both teams took a lot of penalties, some deserved and some not. Although both teams agreed the refereeing left something to be desired, they also agreed that it was as even for one as the other. The girls played a fine game and it set the stage for Sunday morn- ing when we met Sudbury. Sudbury had not won a game as yet, and although we didn't need the win, we had to get ready for the championship game. Sudbury was tough and we had to settle for a tie although we did have them 8-6 with a few minutes left. With 2;54 left in the game, Megan was taken out in front of the net on a breakaway, and was awarded a penalty shot. After chewing off her fingernails, and getting all kinds of advice, the whistle blew and Megan headed for the net and notched our 8th goal for a lead of 2. Then Michelle and Jennifer decided it was get- ting boring on the ice and that it was time to discuss their make-up while sitting in the penalty box. We couldn't hold them off and Sudbury notched 2, to give us the tie. Kim played very well as did Tracy but it was pretty lonely MON-SAT 9:30 AM to 5:30 PM SUNDAY 12:00 Noon to 4:00 PM POLARIS Cool Savings on Hot Sleds January 2 - February 28 Polaris has taken the chill out of winter and put more fun back into it with reduced prices on selected 1990 model Polaris snowmobiles. Two Sud- bury girls had to be carried off by stretcher during this one, and we understand one had a sprained ankle and she will be all right, and the other had her knee give out from a previous injury and we wish them both well. The championship game saw us against Waterloo again, and it just wasn't to be as we went down 11-6 to a determined Waterloo club. Our girls played hard but things just didn't click. We kept check- ing hard and working the ring -around in front of the net, but 3 girls on the Waterloo team joined together for 90 percent of their scoring and it was just too much. Some very proud parents watch- ed their daughters receive the silver medals for their efforts. Over the 4 games Kim Pop- pleton played her usual fine game on defense and stood strong as the fast skating forwards charged in on her. She set up 3 of our goals and many more potential ones, and stopped more than anyone could count. Jennifer Morden gave her the additional help she needed and set On Monday, January 8, Port Perry 2's travelled to Orono for the last league game before the playoffs. The Port team did well winning 1-0 in a back and forth game. Lindsay Parry was the one who scored with Sean McEnaney & win Tween title In the Tweens Division at the Scugog Ringette tourna- gi ment, the Port team ran into tough opposition from Waterloo Warriors and went down to defeat 11-5. Sandra Gutscher of Waterloo accepts trophy from Roy Goodwin of Port Perry Rotary, and at right is Port captain Amy Parliament. up one goal. She made it very tough for the forwards around our net. Amanda Webb and Michelle Fitzpatrick helped out on defense during all games and many favourable comments were received from the spectators about how well they did, Amanda especially on Saturday night and Michelle on Sunday. Amanda scored 4 goals and Michelle scored 1 and assisted in 3. Tammy Pillman picked up 2 assists and became the filling for a sandwich late in the game on Saturday. Since Christmas, Tam- my has really been on a tear and has had many good chances around the net. Keep up the hard work Tammy. The combo of Karen Kett and Amy Parliament managed to do a lot of scoring to keep us in the games and some beautiful goals were scored as a result of some excellent passing between these two. Karen picked up 4 goals and 9 assists, and Amy had 7 goals and 4 assists. Megan Marlowe really turned on this weekend, and it was very evident to the coaches and fans that she came to play, picking up Jason Coutoulakis assisting. Jason did a lot of good digging in the corners. The line consisting of Jeff Card, Scott Wylie and Chad Garvock played a really awesome game but just couldn't put it in the net. Nice job Megan and nice goal in the penal- ty shot. Shannon Fox was held scoreless but did manage to set up 2 goals. Shannon still can outskate the best of them and her shot is one of the hardest in the league. We are certain that her current scor- ing slump is only temporary and she will rebound very soon. Although Tracy Pelow had some tough times on Sunday, she still has an average of about 3.5 goals per game and she has given us some of the best goaltending in. the league this year. Her shutout against Ajax last week sure helped this average. Congratulations to the Ringette Association for a very successful tournament. This was their first tournament of this size, and from all reports, it was very well received by the participating teams. Over the past 4 years, we have attended a lot of "big city" tournaments, and our small town kept pace with the best of them. Many hours were put in by parents and volunteers and it all helped to make it a big success. Sunderland got the first goal of the game but Chad Garvock tied the score very shortly after. The next goal for Port was scored by Jason Coutoulakis with a lot of good effort in the corners ~ by Todd Smart Port scored four more goals after this by Sean McEnaney with 2; Ryan Picard with one and Chris "Bobby Orr" MacLeod with one also. Saturday, Jan. 13, Port went to Sunderland and lost 2-1. Port played a good game con- sidering how small the rink was. Port's goal was scored by Lindsay Parry with good work off the face- off by Sean McEnaney. Scott Wylie also banged in a beauty but the referee didn't count it. This weekend Port is going to Flesherton for a 1 night, 2 day tournament called the Golden Puck., Poct, Pecryia next, home game is on Wed., Jan 24 against Fenelon Falls at 7:40 pom.
