MoJacks rebound for a win and tie The Port Pe MoJacks got their game back on track with a win and a tie just before the Christmas break in the Cen- tral Junior C Hockey League. After a disappointing effort December 19 in which the Mo- Jacks fell 6-3 to the Ajax Axe- men, the team rallied for a 2-2 tie December 22 against the Bruins in Uxbridge. Then 24 hours later, the shooters cleared the frost from their sights in the chilly Co- bourg Arena and the team came home to celebrate Christmas with an 8-3 win over the Cou- gers, Warren Geer and Darren Lee paced the team with two goals each, with singles to Steve Durham, Steve Connors, Rob Metcalfe and John Lally. Chris Arsenault helped the cause with three assists, with Connors and Brad Menzies chipping in with two helpers each. The MoJacks were never in trouble in this game as they opened a 4-1 lead after 20 min- utes, added another in the sec- ond and three more in the final stanza. Three of the MoJack goals came on the power play as the Cougers took 25 minors in this. Port Perry took 19 trips to the "sin bin." In the game played Decem- ber 19 in Ajax, the MoJacks had more than their share of decent scoring chances. Darren Lee, Warren Geer and John Harman managed to beat Gosleigh in the Axemen cage. Metcalfe had two assists with singles to Harman and Jim Vernon. In Uxbridge on December 22, the MoJacks spotted the «- Bruins a 2-0 lead as John 'Steeves and Kirk Smythe scored in the first period. Steeves' goal came on a hard shot from near the blue line that seemed to catch Tony Sortinooffguard. The MoJacks had plenty of chances to get back in the game -in the second period, but were unable to take advantage of a series of Bruin minor penalties. They were controlling the puck on the power play, but on the point shots were not able to effectively jam the crease area in front of netminder Brian Harnden. But they did get one in the final minute with Warren Geer pulling the trigger after passes rom Menzies and Connors. Andit was Connors who got the tying goal with just over two minutes left in the game, also on the power play. " John Lally set him up in the slot with a pass from the cor- ner and Connors made no mis- take on a rising shot over Harn- den's blocker. The game was not without aminor controversy in the final minutes. Down 2-1 and enjoying a man advantage, the MoJacks called for a stick measurement on one of the Bruin players. Referee Bob Bell took the stick to the dressing room and after a lengthy period of time, emerged to rule that the stick wasillegal (the blade too wide) That gave the MoJacks the two man advantage and led to Connors' goal. It also infuriated the Bruin general manager Chuck Phillips, and he threat- ened to order stick measure- ments against all the MoJacks. The Bruins called for a measurement against one Mo- - Jack stick. Referee Bell again retired to the dressing room for several minutes, and ruled the stick was within the rules. For some reason he de- clined to assess the Bruins a mi- nor penalty for delay of game. Had he given the Bruins the delay of game minor, the Modacks would have had a two man advantage after Connors had scored the tying goal. Phillips was still fuming loudly about the stick measure- ment call long after the game had ended. The story of this game was the play of both goalies: Sortino for the MoJacks and Harnden for the Bruins. Both were named game stars and deserved it. Harnden robbed the ModJacksseveral times and Sortino made one stop in particular in the third peridd that was a gem. After locking a hard shot with the pads, he used the trapper to spear a point-blank drive that had "goal" written all over it. MoJacks were assessed 11 minors in this one, while the Bruins took 19, and both of the Stars nip the Rockets by 7-6 Senior Action In the final senior floor hockey game of the year at R.H. Cornish on Monday December 18, the Shooting Stars defeated the Red Rockets by a 7 to 6 score. This was a fast, well played game in which the lead bounced back and forth a few times. By the end of the first period the Shooting Stars were ahead 2 to 1 on goals: - » SKI WEAR -- NOW AVAILABLE -- K-WAY, DITRANI, SUN-ICE Touques, Headbands, Ski Gloves PINERIDGE SPORTS SHOP Queen Street - Port Perry PHONE 985-2839 ) i" \ by Kevin Pike and Kevin Gray. The Rockets playing coach, Doug Suppelsa scored their only goal this period. In the second period the Red Rockets actually took a 5-4 lead as Matt Youmans and Mark Suppelsa both scored two goals each, Seth Gray and John Hall notched the Stars goals this period. In the third period the Shooting Stars outscored the Rockets 3-1 to secure their 7-6 victory. Seth Gray and Adam Jones got goals for the Stars. As well, playing coach Bill Cook blasted one past son Cameron who was in net for the Rockets. Matt Youmans scored the only goal for the Rockets to complete his hat trick. Best of the season *o all the boys and we will see ya in January 8, 1990 to start another session of Y - floor hockey. Special thanks to Ron Short, Bill Cook and Mike Woodcock for helping coacl ModJacks goals came on the pow- er play. SLAPSHOTS: Injuries are starting to take their toll on the MoJack defense. Rob Willetts missed a couple of games with a bad elbow, though he may be back in uniform this weekend. And in Cobourg, steady Paul Wilkins stopped a blast on the front of his foot. He suffered a muscle tear and likely will be out of action for several games. Chris Edmonson remains on the shelf following knee sur- gery three weeks ago. Coach Ken Harman will have to do some juggling to fill the vacant spots along the blue line, though the addition of Rob Metcalfe two weeks ago has helped greatly. And Warren Geer has dis- played his versatility by taking 2a PORT PERRY STAR -- Thursday, December 28, 1989 -- 23 aregular shift on defense. The ModJacks will need all the healthy troops they can muster to-night (Thurs. Decem- ber 28) as they host the Bow- manville Eagles at the Scugog Arena for an 8:30 face-off. The Eagles, firmly in first place, have been rolling over the opposition lately. Last time the teams met late in November, the game was a dandy and ended in a 4-4 deadlock. Eagles won the first two meetings early in the sea- son. On December 30, the Mo- Jacks journey to Little Britain to face the Merchants at 7:30. The League schedule is coming into the home stretch, After the weekend, the Mo- Jacks have just eight games re- maining before playoffs. After a quick start, the team has cooled off slightly over the last ten games with five ties, three wins and two losses. They still have a shot at first place with a red hot stretch drive, but must keep their eye on Ajax and Uxbridge who have second place in their gights. The League All Star game will be in Little Britain January 13. Coaches Ken Harman and Garnet Warriner will skipper the All Stars who take on first place Bowmanville. Game time is 7:30. Pro- ceeds from this game go into a fund to assist Junior C players who areinjured. Each team (other than Bowmanville) will send three players tothe All Star game. The 4th annual Re/Max Scugog Realty Bonspiel on Boxing Day turned into a close af- fair with Scott Howey's rink taking home first place with 44 points, just one point on the team skipped by Earl Mayes. At left, Morley Bruce presents the trophy to winning skip Scott Howey and his rink of Steve Anderson, Glenn Abbey and Allan Argue. Bruce Peters took 3rd place, with Ralph Falrman 4th and Ted Griffen teams from the Port Perry Curling Club.
