26 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, December 19, 1989 The Port Perry ModJacks snapped a four-game home ice winless streak Sunday night as they edged the Uxbridge Bruins 3-2 in a Central Ontario Junior Ctilt at the Scugog Arena. Netminder Tony Sortino faced 33 shots in this game, and he was sharp from start to fin- ish, but especially in the final period. He came up with an out- standing stop with less than ten seconds in the game to preserve the victory. In fact, unlike recent games, the entire MoJack team turned in a tough third period to keep the Bruins at bay. With the clubs tied at 2-2 after 40 minutes, Danny Maw netted the winner at 15:02, as he finished offa three-way pass- ing play from Jim Vernon and Steve Connors. Maw was alone in front of the net to slap the puck behind Bruin goalie Mike Robertson. . The MoJacks came out in a big hurry in this one as Steve Durham spotted the team a 1-0 lead after just 16 seconds with assists to Todd: Taylor and Chris Arsenault. At 10:24, they went up 2-0 on the power play as Rob Wil- letts wasted no time banging home a centering pass. Taylor and John Lally drew the assists on that one. The ModJacks seemed to go into a bit of a shell in the second period, perhaps sitting back on their heels trying to protect the two goal lead. The Bruins were abletoge t back in it with goals by Greg Cook and Jason Underwood, which tied the game and set the stage for the third period. There was a large crowd on hand at the Scugog Arena (the annual Christmas' game, whiche featured a visit from Saint Nick and lots of lucky draw prizes) And the crowd was treated to a fine game as the teams stuck to hockey. In fact, they played the third period penalty free. While Sortino was facing 33 shots in the MoJack net, Rob- ertson wasn't quite as busy with 26 chunks of rubber thrown his way. The victory was a very im- portant one for the MoJacks if they are to have any chance of catching first place Bowman- ville. Perhaps more important, the two points widened the gap over the Bruins who are in third place, and coming off an 8-3 vic- tory Friday over Lakefield. It was only the second win in the last se ven games for the ' MoJacks, a string which includ- ed four ties. This was a typical Port Perry-Uxbridge match with lots of heavy hitting and close check- ing. SLAPSHOTS: Christmas may be just around the corner, but the MoJacks have a lot of hock- ey to play before they can put their feet up for a brief break to welcome the chubby elf in the bright red suit. Tonight (Dec. 19) they are in Ajax. On Friday, they jour- ney west to meet the Bruins for a return match with face-off at 8:30, and this Saturday, they make the long road trip to Co- bourg for a game with the Cou- gers. Head coach Ken Harman would dearly love to find six points out of these three games in his Christmas stocking. With veteran defenseman Chris Edmonson out of the line- up indefinitely with a knee inju- ry, the MoJacks welcomed Rob Metcalfe to the blue line for Sunday's game against the Bruins. Metcalfe, who was wearing #5, will do nothing but help the club. Two years ago in his roo- kie season, he was a niainstay on the team which reached the all-Ontario finals. Generals land Eric Lindros The Oshawa Generals of the OHL have acquired, Eric Lindros, the 16-year old hockey sensation who many feel could - be the next Wayne Gretzky or Mario Lemieux. The Generals announced the acquisition late Sunday eve- ning in a deal with the Sault Greyhounds who held Lindros's rightsin the OHL. But the Oshawa club paid a significant price. Going to the Greyhounds are forwards Mike DeCoff and Jason Denome, goalie Mike Lenarduzzi, second round draft picks in 1990 and 1991, and an un-disclosed amount of cash. : dros, who won't cele- brate his 17th birthday until February, stands 6'4" and \ | i ea i lA weighs 220 pounds. And with a little help from Kristine Payne and Jennifer Blackburn, he had the honour of dropping a ceremonial puck to get the game underway. Legionaires on a streak The Port Perry Legion Pee Wees had one of their quietest weeks, from an action standpoint, in a long time. However, it was highly successful, as they added number 8 to the wi streak by beating Port Hope Redmen 4-3 at home on Friday night. Legionaires started strongly, controlling much of the play and had a particularly potent power lay effort. After dominating the Rte penalty killers, Port got on the board when Jay Tredway knocked in his 21st of the year for a 1-0 lead. Sean Ellis and Joe Broadworth got the assists, and all five men on the ice threw the puck around effectively. 'Early in the second period, ] Kenton LeFort upped the lead with some outstanding hustle by slipping the puck inside the post while being checked by both defencemen and the goalie. Halfway through the second, Neil Mueller made a nice rush and was stopped by the Port Hope goalie. Dave was trailing the play and blocked the clearing attempt inside the blue line, then fed a good pass to Neil in the circle who . blasted it into the net, Kenton also drew an assist. Having taken the 3-0 lead, the Legionaires then took a momen- tary break and by the time they went to the room the score was 3-3. After regrouping, Port came out strongly again and less than three minutes into the period, Joe took Jay T.'s pass, circled the net and bounced a pass attempt off the goaltender to score the winn- ing goal. Port then finished the game by thwarting all comeback tries including killing two late penalties. This was another excellent team effort as the defence did not figure in the scoring, but were ef- fective in their own end and con- tributed to the first win of the year over the Redmen. This week, the Legionaires host Bowmanville Friday night, then travel to Lindsay Saturday afternoon.
