16 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, December 19, 1989 To Russia, with love A Scugog Township resi- dent has taken the unusual step of writing a personal letter to Soviet Premier Mikhail Gorba- chev. John Den Boer, a retired farmer who immigrated to Can- adain 1968, told the Star, he de- cided to express his feelings af- ter reading of the Soviet Preniier's visit recently with esident writes to the Pope. . Den Boer has mailed the letter off to the Soviet em- bassy in Ottawa, with specific instructions that it be foreward- ed to Gorbachev's office in Mos- COW. He's not sure if he will ever get a response, or even if the let- ter will eventually find its way to Moscow, but he's hopeful it Scugog resident John Den Boer hold copy of the letter he has sent to Soviet Premier Mikhail Gorbachev. (see story) will. Mr. Den Boer has allowed the letter to be re-printed in the Port Perry Star. Dear Mr. Gorbachev: You may be surprised to get a letter from someone like me. I was born in 1920 and raised on a farm in Holland, but since 1968, I have lived in Canada on a farm. As a teen-ager, I became aware of the difficulties and re- strictions Christians in Russia had to live under. I read in the papers about the cruel purges of even high ranking communists by Stalin. The 1939 Pact be- tween Stalin and Hitler struck fear in my heart, but in 1941, it was broken by the un-expected attack on Russia, and Russia then became an ally. During the last three years, we in Canada have heard much about glasnost, perestroika, greater freedom of opinion, and also more freedom for Chris- tians in Russia. I thank God for that, and appreciate yourinitia- tive and courage in promoting these reforms. We in Canada also hear about your country's economic difficulties, and the years of hardship the Russian people are facing. The Globe and Mail news- paper on December 1 reported your visit to Rome. I have been raised in the belief that the Bible has a message, not only salvation from sin in Jesus Christ, but also about living our lives today in social and politi- cal life. Marx saw that Chris- tians and governments did not live up to the Biblical message and called for the basic laws of morality and humanity. You said in Rome that at this crucial point in world history we must rely on the eternal moral com- mandments. You also recog- nized that we need spiritual val- ues and religious values can help your country with its eco- p= 2S 7 holiday season. You stated that you now proceed from the assumption that no none should interfere in mat- ters of individual conscience. I appreciate your comments. A Christian has no clear- cut choice between a capitalist or socialist society since both have their draw-backs and both are easily contaminated by sin. As a Christian, I cannot object Gorbachev are committed to socialism. But Christians do see the task of overnment as promoting free- om of conscience, the adminis- tration of justice and improving the nation's general welfare. We pray more and more governments around the world may see their task this way. And may the Russian people, who have suffered so much through the centuries, also have abetter future.
