32 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, December 12, 1989 This past Saturday, the Allens Siding Provincial "A" Tweens travelled to Mississauga for their first of two weekend games. For the first half, the girls looked like old age had set in but they still managed to keep the score even at 3 each. With 2:54 left in the game, Mississauga went ahead by one and it looked like we had lost this one, until Amy Parlia- ment tied it again with 3 seconds left oh the clock. The scoring was Amanda Webb 1 goal, Shannon Fox 1 goal, 1 assist, Amy Parliament 1 goal, Tanya Towns 1 assist, Kim Pop- pleton 1 assists, Karen Kett 1 assist, and Michelle Fitzpatrick 1 goal and 1 assist. be The girls played well for the last 10 minutes, and actually could have taken this game, but maybe next time. On Sunday, the Siders headed back to the west end of Toronto to play the squad from Etobicoke. This was the first time that 10 grandmothers have ever taken to the ice to represent our team. All of our defence was brought for- ward, and some of the forwards filled in on defence and did an ex- cellent job, and we thank them. Fortunately for us Tracy Pelow came ready to play and kept Etobicoke down to 3 goals in the first half and none in the second. After 14 minutes, the girls final- ly got rid of their canes and wheelchairs, and started to look like the team from days gone by. Karen Kett proved that her hair isn't gray, as she netted the first goal with one minute left, after 2 good passes from Kim Poppleton and Jennifer Morden. Karen also scored 2 more goals later. That was our only marker, but in the second period, it was all Ports game as the girls answered with 8 more. Kim Poppleton scored on a good shot to the ' corner with assists to - Karen and Michelle, and Kim also picked up 2 more assists in the Scugog League Quiet Day in Mens League The first game saw Sportsland come from behind to pull out a 4-4 tie with J&D. Counting for Sportsland were Ken Smart 2 goals, Fred Moffatt 1goal, 1 assist and Bob Beveridge 1 goal. Assists to Rob Evans 3, Bob McEachern and Dick Martin leach. : Tallying for J&D were Bill Bridge 1 goal, 2 assists, Ron Jef- frey 1 goal, 1 assist, Tom Patton and Dale Bronson 1 goal a piece. Tanya then reversed the role and scored on a good pass from Kim and Megan Marlowe. Tammy Pillman then showed her stuff around the front of the.net and popped one behind the goalie, but unfortunately, it was disallowed as she went into the crease. Next time Tammy. Then Shannon Fox picked up Michelle's pass and with a burst of speed, beat the goalie with a shot fast enough that she didn't see it. A good combination of passing from Tammy and Amy, provided a good chance for Amanda Webb, and she capitalized on it, after -deking two defencemen (defencewomen). Then, one of the hardest body checks ever handed out, went to Michelle, who got flattened by her own teammate, "Jennifer the " Bulldozer." The ring came loose and Jen was able to take it in and score our 9th and final goal. Michelle forgave her when she realized she was credited with an assist. Jen - no body contact in Petites prevail On Sunday, the team from Bob- caygeon travelled to Port Perry to play a league game against the Bruton's IDA Petite team. The visiting team was small in' numbers and small in stature, but they came out skating with deter- mination. They scored the. first goal after only four minutes of play, and that was when our Port girls decided to get serious. The coaches, Dan Harris, Steve Payne, and Doug Anderson had a game plan devised which involv- ed switching many of the players from their regular positions. This ~ plan obviously was a good one, as the home team scored the next 9 unanswered goals. With Katie Senyk in net, Shona Moase played out and scored three goals. Cindy Verschurren and Cara Vander Slagt each scored twice, and Melissa Dawson and Jenny Storms each netted one. Just as important were the girls who set up these goals, and assists went to Sheila Ranger and Brandy Harris with three each, Lynda Payne with two, and Joan Anderson, Mandy Smart, Melissa D., Jenny and Cara each with one assist. For the record book, the line of Melissa Pereman, Leanne Wakeford, and Michelle Branton hit the goal post 7 times in one shift. Dana Hooker and Natasha Burgess both played their first full game at red stick . The next game is on Saturday at/4 p.m. at the Mariposa Arena. This was a fun game and it was great to hear a lot of laughs from the girls (or grandmothers). Maybe it was the chocolate bars that slowed them down and not old age. We understand the teachers at R.H. Cornish are interested in a closer look at this game called Atoms The Pineridge Atom's have had a busy hockey schedule. Thurs- day night at home they played an exhibition game against Whitby. Kevin Hobbs started the scor- ing when he took the puck from the face off and fired it in. On a fine passing play by Danny Robinson and Jason Hopkins, Justin Halligan was set up out in front and put it in. Whitby came back strong and at the end of the first period it was 3-2. Kevin Hobbs and Kevin Cochrane set Jason Hopkins up nicely out in front and Jason found the empty mesh. Later on, Danny Robinson had a stick thrown across in front of his shot and was awarded a penalty shot. He made a great deke on the goalie and scored Port's 4th. This one ended up 8-4 for Whitby. Friday night, these guys travelled to Cobourg and came out victorious in league action 5-4. They each notched 1 in the first Jason Hopkins got the puck to defenseman Chris Drury who fired one of his hard shots behind the goalie. ; By the end of the second Port was ahead by one. Matt Phillips scored on a pass from Kevin Cochrane and Shane Norton got a marker, assisted by Kevin Hobbs and Bobby Cracknell. Early in the ~ third, Cobourg tied it up and with 47 seconds left, making it an ex- citing finish, Jason Hopkins put it in an open net, assists to Justin Halligan and Kevin Hobbs. Saturday morning they travell- ed to Bobcaygeon in tournament action. They met Sutton in their first game. They checked hard and played well but couldn't get any markers and dropped this one 'Granny' Tweens finally got rid of canes Ringette and the girls think they want to show them what it's all about. General concensus however, was that they wanted a game against the Pee Wee 'A' team as well. We are trying to pick up some extra ice time to accom- modate both and should know soon 4-0. - Game No.2, they played St. John's. They had lost to this team in the Oakwood Tournamert but with the direction of three great coaches these guys have learned a lot. They beat this team, this time, 6-0. They passed and played together for 3 periods. Derek Leeming played a strong game with 2 big goals. Assists to Mike Morden and Kevin Cochrane. Mike assisted on Robert Gracies first goal for this year. An awesome shot from the blue line. Kevin Hobbs put the puck out in front to Justin Halligan who made sure with an open net. Trevor Smith with some great stick handling scored Port's 5th and Mike Morden ended Port's scoring with an assist to Robert Gracie. Paul Shrigley enjoyed the shutout between the pipes. At noon on Sunday, Jason Hopkins, Chris Drury and Paul Shrigley participated in the Golden Stick shoot out and all did very well and showed good sportsmanship, Port played their third game against Oakwood. Port held them at 2-1 until the end of the second period. Port's goal was scored by Matt Phillips on a great back hand from out in front. In the third period, Oakwood pulled ahead 5-1 until 3 seconds left in the game, when Kevin Hobbs checked the defense and went in to deke the goalie scoring Port's second goal. It was a great game guys. Keep up the good work coaches...it's paying off! Port plays their next league game at home Thursday night at 8:00.
