3 7 FFE SEE aaa. a 30 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, December 12, 1989 Port Bantams reach the finals in fournament On Saturday December 9, the Goreski Insulator Bantam hockey club sponsored by Ken and Diane Goreski strolled into the complex in Port Hope to take part in a tour- nament consisting of 8 teams: Trenton, Oshawa, Millbrook, - Markham, Port Perry, Whitby, Brighton and host Port Hope. This was a good tournament all round and there were some top quality teams who competed in this event. In the end though it was the Port Perry Insulators taking on Millbrook for the gold. Port played poorly in this one and lost to Millbrook 3-0. The "Turtles," along with Blades, Nick, Hilly, and Huggy came to play hockey and got on the right track in the first game as they beat the Oshawa Black Hawks 4 goals to 2. The games were 3 ten minute periods and Port got rolling just :23 seconds in. It was the 3 amigos shooting down the defence as Parry popped one home from his linemates J. Cochrane and Laird. The three amigos had plenty of ammo in this game as they decid- ed heck, let's do it again. It was Parry again 2 minutes later as he dumped one out front and it went in off a skate. That just proves a good goal scorer can score from anywhere. Assisting on Parry's tally was J. Cochrane. Oshawa had to do something to get back in the hockey game so they scored to make it 2-1. Port's offence was on a tear. 'The second frame was the victim and it was Empringham who found twine, off a beautiful set up from Traynor and Moase. Oshawa wanted to make this a barn burner, so they scored once more to make it 3-2. Oshawa pulled their goalie for the extra attacker and made a mistake, J. Cochrane was on the ice. Cochrane was sent away on an open net breakaway from Parry and Empringham. Cochrane made no mistake as he looked like a blue streak flying down the ice. Larocque got the call and played great. Nice game. Port then had to confront a tough Markham team four hours later. This would be the game that pro- ved to get them in the final as the "turtles" whipped, shut out and clobbered Markham 3-0. A beautiful sight indeed, just ask Blades. The thing that Blades is still worrying about is stupid penalties and the turtles were guilty of this, | Great Christmas Ideas! Sone Pa ot (0% nos? vo? The object in this game was to shoot the puck because it does work sports fans, you should try it some time, believe me. Port had turned it up and extra note in this one as they wanted a passport to the final and they got one by beating Markham 3-0. What a game! Lovely! Hutchy got the call and he literally stoned, rejected, stymied, burned and deprived the Markham club along with some great defense by Bricknell, G. Cochrane, Traynor and Vander Slagt (who played with a sore hip). Port's arsenal was pumped, and were they ever, when J. Parry popped one home from.J. Cochrane and Traynor at the 2:23 mark of the first. Then again in the first, Port continued to saturate the goal of Markham when J. Cochrane scored off a re- bound from Bricknell and Parry, Parry was now 5 under for the tournament. A power play goal. Markham was frustrated with the play of Hutchy and could not score. Port decided to put some insurance on the board as Darrell Vander Slagt scored his first of the season. J. Cochrane assisted. That was all the scoring, as the goal by Parry proved to be the winner. Port had the passport and were off to the Championship game to play a very disciplined team from Millbrook. Millbrook proved to be the bet- ter team in this game as they went on to beat the turtles 3-0. They played like turtles in this game folks as they came out slower than the Nordiques Millbrook was up by 2 going in- to the second and we'll tell ya, Port would have to climb a tremendous Drumlin (a rounded hill of glacial drift) to over power Millbrook. Port obviously didn't try to climb the hill. Blades told us once again to shoot the puck but we only registered about 12 shots on the Millbrook stopper. There was ob- viously too much dippsi-doddling in this game as Port made the ex- tra move at the blue line and didn't shoot the disc. Blades said after the game,' 'They're a good team, but they're not that good! Tripp got fine goaltending and defense, but the scoring touch was cold as the weather as the team lost three games by the same 2-1 margin. On Saturday, it was Jay ° Fletcher who found the twine against Oshawa Simcoe St., but the score was 2-1 for the other guys.
