rd Ix) '14 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, December 12, 1989 Centre needs donations and volunteers Rape Crisis Centre celebrates 'By Storry The Scugog Rape Crisis Cen- tre in Port Perry is celebrating its tenth anniversary, but is in need of donations, and volun- teers. The Centre which officially opened in February of 1980, has increasingly become busi- er, making it impossible for the volunteers to get the work done. Until two years ago all em- ployees were strictly volunteer, until Jeannette Ross was hired, as Office Co-ordinator According to Ms. Ross the work has become too much for one person, as the centre also serves the Brock and Uxbridge areas. She said that the Centre's fi- nancial status is alwaysinjeop- ardy. An amount of $19,000 is provided by the provincial gov- ernment for the centres, but she states this only covers 50% of their funding. The remainder of their finances comes from a bingo night, the centre has put "on for four years. "We have reached the point, *5909 NOW! , *934 LATER! that this is not enough, we do need donations, whether it be money or office furniture," Ms. Ross said. . Brenda Newsome, who is Public Education Co-ordinator for the centre states that this funding is something they struggle with all the time. ile the centres for victims receive $19,000 a year, the gov- ernment gives $81,000 to or- ganizations and centres that help the men who abused these women," she said. The Scugog Centre deals with any violent crime, against women or children that they run into in their lives. The cen- tre will provide information to the victim, and listen to her sit- uation, and later, if the victim wishes, intercede on her behalf when the women decides the choice she wants to make. When the Centre began in Port Perry, it received some negative comments from people in the community(it is only one of two centres in Durham Re- gion). According to Ms. Ross the centre represents something RC he A genuine 3-inlet Beam Built-in Vacuum! i (Model 167 - Famous workhorse of the home, inside & out) Beam"s deluxe Attachment Tool Kit i Beam Quality sound-reducing Exhaust Muffler 4 A deluxe Beam Powerhead, with beater bars! Now Ms. Ross wants people to know thatitis there, as there . are women who need the ser- vice, "I think we will attract more than we repel," Ms. Newsome said. "We always are seen as peo- le with commitment, and owledge," Ms. Ross said. This centre was one in five that was invited from Canada to the National Coalition Against Sexual Assault in Phil- adelphia, last year. Ms. Ross said that the centre is seriously considering joining the NCA- SA, as they have more funding, which means more information is available to them. "The Port Perry area is grow- ing, and the people are being deprived of information that fhisy should be getting," she said. According to Ms. Ross, there is a great increase in reports to thesecentres. "People are coming out, and talking about it, it is no longer in the closet," Ms. Newsome said. There has been an increase in calls. This year (January to September) the centre has re- ceived 112 crises calls. Thirty- seven of these calls have been incest related, and 74 have been sexual assault related calls. This number has in- creased from last year, as the entire year resulted in 99 calls. "On a per capita basis, we get the same amount of calls as To- ronto," Ms. Ross said. She also stated that certain circumstances give women the strength to call. When adver- tisements were placed on tele- Brenda Newsome vision about such centres, calls doubled. The Scugog Centre had 9 calls in the first week. When Extremities(A Farrah Fawcett movie, where she was brutally attacked) aired, it gave women the strength to call these centres. Ms. Ross stated that the Scugog Centre has wanted for _ years tocreate alibrary, and re- source centre. They are nowin the process of doing this, to pro- vide women with more informa- tion booklets, and to allow them to borrow books, and articles, on any issue pertaining to wom- en. The Centre also would like to develop a discussion night where women could openly dis- cuss their problems and fears. Jeannette Ross Any woman who would like information, or just to talk, is encouraged to call the Scugog Centre(located on = North Street), or call the 24 hotline (679-8006), where an answer- ing machine will take down the telephone number, and some- onewill returnthecall.. Inthe case of an emergency the caller will be "patched" through to someone to talk to, Ms. Ross would like to stress that every- thing is confidential; a name does not have to be given. The centre is there for information, and encouragement. "People must only give as much information as they wish. The control of their life has been taken away, we are here to encourage them to take back that control," she said.
