Tunney accepts second term as chairman of separate school board At the Inaugural Board ineeting held December 4, Catharine Tun- ney was acclaimed Chairman of the Durham Region Roman Catholic Separate School Board, a second term for the Whitby trustee. Joseph Corey, an Oshawa trustee, was acclaimed as the Board's Vice Chairman. An 18 year veteran of the Board, Mr. Corey served as Chairman in 1979 and 1980. On December 3, the French Language Section acclaimed Fleurette Leger Chairman, and Roger Brideau Vice Chairman of the French Language-Section. Both are Oshawa/Whitby Trustees. At the meeting of the English Language Section, December 5, Mary Zecchino, a Pickering trustee, was acclaimed Chairman, and Ajax trustee, Susan Dulny, was acclaimed Vice-Chairman of the English Language Section. Chairman Tunney accepted her acclamation with words of ap- preciation for her fellow trustees, whom she congratulated for their teamwork and diligence. Looking ahead to a challenging year, Chairman Tunney promis- ed to continue working in- dustriously on behalf of the Board and its ratepayers. Fair funding, she stated, will remain a top priority in 1990, and the Board will continue to urge the province to establish equitable funding legislation for separate schools. Accommodation and Special Education are among additional key issues the Board will address during the year ahead. All good programs, the Director em- phasized, but, since the Ministry does not provide additional funds, the Board is left to carry the burden of financing these programs. In negotiations presently under- way with a number of Bargaining Units, the Board is aiming for fair and equitable settlements. Ac- commodating the region's fast- growing student population will continue to demand persistence and innovation. In closing, Dr. Lagroix stress- ed the need for a 'cohesive board with a Christian sense of Com- munity as we enter the '90's."'
