Port Perry MoJack net- minder Tony Sortino may have had a bit of trouble getting to sléep Sunday night. Sortino was between the pipes as the MoJacks met the Cobourg Cougers at the Scugog Arena, and for 59 minutes and 69 seconds he had turned in his usual solid game. . The Markham native had faced 25 Cobourg shots, blocked all but two, and it looked like the team was going to take a hard fought victory by a 3-2 score. But suddenly with one sec- ond left on the time clock, Co- bourg's Mark Vilnefffired a des- peration shot from the blue line. It wasn't a very hard shot. In fact, it was the kind of shot that Sortino has seen thou- sands of times since he first strapped on goal pads. But on this one, the puck hit the blade of his stick, flipped up in the air, over his shoulder, and landed an inch or two behind the redline. The Cougers had tied the - game at 8-8 with one second to playin the game. For the ModJacks, it was their third straight deadlock, and the second in a row against the Cougers as the two teams battled to a 5-56 draw November 27in Cobourg. Sunday's game at the Scu- 80g Arena was a close checking affair, although the MoJacks enjoyed a territorial advantage. But, just as Sortino was "snake-bit" in the last second, the MoJack shooters didn't have a lot of luck through-out the game as they missed on a fair number of quality chances. Cougers opened the scoring early in the first as Shawn Hutchins fired through a scramble. At 6:27 of the second, Mo- Jacks Darren Lee tied the game with a shot from the slot with Len Giacalone and Steve Dur- ham getting the assists. Three minutes later, Mo- Jack leading scorer John Har- man was set up at the side of the net by linemates Warren Geer and John Lally and Harman snapped the puck past Jason Riehl. Just past the mid-point, the Cougers tied things at 2-2 on a goal by Dave Fowler off a huge scramble in front of Sorti- no. Early in the third, Len Gia- calone converted a pass from Durham on a two on one break to give the MoJacks a 3-2 lead it looked like this would hold up until the goalie's nightmare struck at 19:59. This was a well played hockey game and ref Gil Nieu- wendyke let the "boys play hockey," calling just six minors to team. On November 27 in Co- bourg, the MoJacks appeared to be cruising towards an easy win as they owned a 5-1 lead early in the third period. But the roof caved in as the Cougers fought back to tie the at 5-5, scoring four times f the final ten minutes, includ- ing ashort-handed goal. ks must settle for 3-3 draw EE SHEE Goal at 19:59 ties game for the visiting Cougers Zz Despite plenty of good scoring chances like this three on one break, the Port Perry MoJacks had to be content with a 3-3 tie with the Cobourg Cougers In Junior C action Sun- day at the Scugog Arena. On Nov. 27, the same two teams skated to a 5-5 saw-off In Cobourg. In Sunday's game, the Harman had a pair for the MoJacks, with singles to Todd Taylor, Jim Gibbens and John Lally, who also had a couple of assists. SLAPSHOTS: The MoJacks have a tough week of hockey ahead of them as they journey to Ajax tonight (December 5) to meet the Axemen. This Friday, they are in Lakefield for a game with the Chiefs who defeated league leading Bowmanville 6-5 last Friday. Then on Sunday, December 10, the Little Britain Mer- chants invade the Scugog Are- na for a 7:30 faceoff. Veteran defenseman Chris Edmonson underwent arthrosc- pic surgery on his knee last week and it's not when (or if) he'll get back on skates. ModJacks are down to four regular defensemen (Arese- nault, Connors, Wilkins, and Willetts) If one of these guys should happen to go down with an injury, things will be very di- cey along the blue line. Warren Geer has played some defense in recent games, ModJacks were heading for a 3-2 victory until Cobourg got a goal with exactly one second left In the third period. And it was the kind of goal that gives netminders nightmares (see story) but that takes away from his scoring and play-making skills as a forward. With tla ee ties in their last three outings, the MoJacks have not been able to make any ground on league leading Bow- manville, despite the Eagles loss' to Lakefield Friday eve- ning. MoJacks have 27 points, five behind Bowmanville as of Sunday night. Still, the ModJacks own a comfortable grip on second spot, thanks in part to an eight game un-defeated streak (five wins, three ties) And in that eight games, they have given up just 26 goals, a credit to the defense and the goaltending Sunday, December 17 should be a big night at the Scu- gog Arena as it's the annual Mo- Jacks Christmas Night. There wiil be lots of lucky draws for the kids, and with the Uxbridge Bruins in town, it should make for a pretty good hockey game as well, as the rivalry between these two teams is intense. XL Eaglettes bring home a trophy In the wee hours ot Saturday the XL Gas Bar Eaglettes awoke parents and journeyed to the Jor- dan Invitational Friendship Tour- nament. After a warm welcome by our hosts, the Eaglettes played the Jordan novice team. The XL girls enjoyed their best ringette of the year, coming out ahead 13-5. Janine Hammond, Laura Hooker, and Alechia Cracknell were a powerhouse offensively, notching multiple goals and assists. The XL Eaglettes next faced the small but mighty Caledonia team, having Janna Senyk as goaltender for her first time. That's the spirit! Jennifer Ham- mond. played out of her net and assisted twice. Our rookie players - Jennifer Donnelly, Melissa Hooker, and Mandy Wakeford assisted our goal-getters: Janine Hammond, Jennifer Elliot, Laura Hooker and Jenny Lane. Diane Vanderligt, Brooke Shanley, and Bonni-Jo Norton were extremely effective both defensively and as playmakers in this 8-3 victory. During the third and final Saturday game, the XL Eaglettes displayed keen ringette skills as they met Jordan again and came out ahead 11-3. In this game, the Port Perry girls passed sharply, looked to each other when setting up plays, and showed how their famous defensive lines operate. The red, white, and blue sticks really meshed. After four years of character building, Sunday morning brought the XL. Eaglettes to a championship playoff with the host Jordan team. Veteran Pam Hiltz joined her team for this special game. Jen- nifer Hammond allowed only 1 goal as the Eaglettes netted 10. The team's effort, smiles, and stamina were rewarded with in- dividual trophies and a large ban- ner for their own hometown arean, Congratulations girls! Thank you as ever to the coaches and to the parents! By the way parents; sharpen your blades for the annual Eaglet- tes/Parents Face-Off this Sunday at 1:30 p.m.! This game is open for public viewing. Y Floor Hockey Seniors In Senior Floor Hockey action played at R.H.
