28 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, November 28, 1989 Pee Wees contend with snow and Orono On a snowy Monday the Port Pee Wee 2's travelled to Orono and were defeated by a score of 4-3. The boys were up for this one and could have easily won it but Orono came through in the last two minutes, robbing us of victory. Orono was ahead 2-0 when Jason Reid carried the puck from the blue line and got a good pass to Brent Harper who shot it in. Early in the third Orono got a power play goal and that seemed to be all our guys needed. Deter- mination set in and we scored 2 quick goals to tie the game up. The first came on a brilliant twirl around shot from Daryl Bourgeois after some fine passing from Matt Hobbs and Sandy Mark. The tieing goal came from same line only Daryl and Matt did the passing and the honours went to Sandy Mark. Although the boys didn't win this one they were very successful Curling corner by Scott Howey Good luck to Jack Owen and his rink of Ted Griffen, Bill Corbett and Bill Jennings who are com- peting in the O.C.A. Seniors competition. This event is being held at the Oshawa Golf Club December 2 and 3. The Port Perry team starts their first game Saturday at 1:00 p.m.. Club playdowns for the Labatt Tankard were held at the club on Sunday November 26. In the first round Steve Foster defeated Scott Howey, while Ralph Fairman drew a buy. Tripp Realty - 3 Gord Lewis - 2 Gord Lewis jumped into a quick 2-0 lead on goals by Matt Grills and Scott Hefferen with Gavin Baxter and Matt Grills picking up 1 assist each. Tripp fought back with 3 goals in the second period for the win. Scoring for Tripp were Dwayne Rombough, Jeff Whitfield and «Jay Fletcher. All three of these goals were unassisted. assisting. In the second period Derek Anderson tallied for two with Jonathan McCourt and Craig Coates assisting on the first, Craig Coates and Greg Pugh the second. Jason Brain scored the third with Greg Thompson and Troy Anderson picking up the assists. In the final period John Hall net- ted his third for his hat-trick with Jonathan McCourt and Mike Balniforth assisting. Clay Scott scored for Big V with the goaltender Dylan Ferguson and Jason Brain earning the assists. Chad Mitchell scored the final for Big V, with Greg Thompson and Ryan Williams receiving the assists. Late in the third, Consumers Gas scored as Neil Hancock scored from Eric Lucyk and Jeff Woodward. On Sunday Port lost to Newmarket 7-1 but they manag- ed to get their first goal of the tournament on a pass from Atom Bs win it 4-0 Pineridge Atom B's played a strong league game against Ux- bridge Thursday night, winning 4-0. Port peppered the Uxbridge net 40 times during the game. Trevor Smith led the scoring when he beat the defense and put it past the goalie. Robert Gracie assisted with a nice pass to Kevin Hobbs who came out of his scoring slump to score Port's second. Jason Hopkins and Kevin Hobbs assisted on an awesome goal by Justin Halligan. Matt Phillips scored Port's last goal unassisted. Paul Shrigley earned his second shutout between the pipes. Port held the Whitby Atom A's in exhibition until the last 3 minutes of the game when Whit- by scored 5 unanswered goals to win 8-5. Two minutes into the game on a breakaway, Whitby scored. After some great forechecking and passing Jason Hopkins came up big to tie it up. Assists to Justin Halligan and Kevin Hobbs. A minute later, a hard working Shane Norton, on a pass from Mike Morden, picked the far cor- ner and put 'Port ahead 2-1. A minute later with a scramble in front, Whitby tied it up. Mike Morden picked up a rebound on a shot by Kevin Hobbs and popped it over the goalie. Whitby tied it again. Mike Morden in the right place again, for his second goal, on a rebound after a hard shot by Chris Drury from the blue line. Matt Phillips put Port ahead 5-3 with a great shot, assisted by Derek Leeming. Whitby came back with 5 goals to win the game. Bobby Cracknell, Danny Robin- son and Kevin Cochrane all work- ed hard in these two games, checking, passing and setting up some fine plays. With Jay Tredway leading the hit parade and Joe Broadworth scoring a pair of goals, Port outhustled and outmuscled the Clippers. On the down side, Neil Mueller reinjured his broken foot after a strong performance in his first game back; and Craig Laird, who leads the team in assists, suf- fered a broken wrist which will .put him on the shelf for a least a month. After a scoreless first period, the Clippers opened the scoring on a blue line blast moments after Mike Pashley had made a tough shoulder stop on an equally potent shot. Halfway through the period some excellent forechecking by Jay T. and Chad Kearns set up Joe to tie the score on a sharp backhander from the faceoff circle. The effects of a lot of hockey with a lack of manpower over the last couple of weeks seemed to contribute as well, as the Legionaires dropped three games. Against Gravenhurst early Saturday morning, Port did outplay the team but lost 6-2 to Gary Sontag as the powerhouse scored 4 goals and set up the other 2. Kenton LeFort, among others, played a strong game, scored both Port goals and was named MVP. Jay Tredway and Sean Ellis assisted on the first, other assists are not available. In the afternoon, a game that Port again held an edge in play resulted in a 3-1 loss to Bracebridge. Sean supplied an early lead, assisted by Jay T.. After tieing the score in the se- cond, Bracebridge went ahead with just over 3 minutes to play; then iced it with an empty netter. Sean picked up the MVP in this game. The:last game was against league rival Stouffville. Again the Sean-Jay T. combo provided an early lead for the good guys. The size and shooting ability of the Clippers slowly wore Port down and eventually carried them toa 6-1 victory. Jay T. was awared MVP for the game.
