Pres. Joyce Jones welcomed everyone and read thoughts from a book, written by Ann Kiemel, followed by prayer. Pat Burley, president of Bethel U.C.W. welcomed the ladies and the Hymn, All The Way My Saviour Leads Me, was sung. Introductions, attendance and regrest followed. After a few changes, the printed agenda was accepted, The printed minutes of the June Executive were approv- ed. Florence Harrison drew our attention to the printed financial report and it was voted to donate an additional $500.00 to Mission dnd Service. Donations to Vic- toria County shelter for battered women, should be sent to Florence and designated to this cause. A letter of thanks from Wendall White was read in ap- Susan is Port Perry TOPS "Take Off Pounds Sensibly" are proud of their 1988 Queen, Susan Forbes. Nine of their members were on hand when Susan was named Runner-up to the Queen at a Ral- ly held in Bowmanville on November 5. She had lost 601% lbs. to reach her goal weight in 1988. An Oshawa member, Margaret Clemenger was chosen Queen with a loss of 64 lbs. to goal. These ladies were the high losers taken from 26 Chapters in the Durham- Northumberland area. Teacher plays bagpipes at Remembrance Day service "= "~"""" by Christina Clark Well, here we are again with . another update from Immaculate Conception School. Boy, it's still busy around here. Last Friday we had a Remembrance Day Ser- vice, complete with a cenotaph and wreath. Also one of our teachers, Mr. Browne, played 'Amazing Grace on the bagpipes. It was a very nice service. Thank you to the two gentlemen from the legion who played Taps for us and to our own army cadets, Mike Gouldborn, James Wells and Paul McLean who took part in the procession. Speaking of service, that's what quite a few grade eight students from our school will be doing. They will be doing some kind of service to help others. Many of these students will be visiting the nursing home on Lilla Street, to talk to some of the elderly on a regular basis after school. Confirmation, which was held last Sunday afternoon, was a love- ly ceremony. The church choir joined with some grade 6 and 7 students to provide the music and Bishop Clune said the Mass. The grade eight students have been preparing for this special sacra- ment for two years now, and with intensive preparation during this past month we are now looked on as adults in the Catholic church. Boy we grade eight girls had a busy weekend. Sunday as, I said, was Confirmation, Friday was the celebration of commitment in the church .when our parents presented us with our baptismal candles, that were given to us first when we were babies and Saturday was our senior girls' in- vitational volleyball tournament at Dennis O'Connor High School in Ajax. It seemed that every time we turned around all weekend, preciation of support given to Quin Mo Lac. Under the direction of Carol Thompson, a mini workshop on Canada's Cultural Mossaic was presented. Joyce Junkin and Con- nie Grundy assisted and with the aid of a flip chart discussed the word "Racism." A whole web of words come to our minds when we think of the word racism. We tend to classify people in groups, whether it be by age, sex, colour, or culture. Carol closed the discussion by reading Acts 10: 34, 35. As a special treat we were in- troduced to Rosita Espinoza of Ecuador, who is a guest of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Ruth and is a member of Canada World Youth. Although Rosita has just been with the Ruth family for three months, she has mastered the English language very well and it - TOPS Also honoured from Port Perry was Florence Hosey who graduated as a KOPS '"'Keep Off Pounds Sensibly."' She had lost 30% lbs. to goal. Susan and Florance together with the Chapters other two KOPS Gloria - Smuck and Bonnie Gerrow are an inspiration to the members to "Take Off Pounds Sensibly." TOPS, Port Perry meet every Tuesday evening in the Anglican Church on North Street from 6:30 . = 8:00 p.m. For more information call Margaret Fritz at 985-2844 days or Alice Woodcock 985-2466. , there was Mr. Hall. I went to see what was going on .in Mrs. Geer's grade one class, - and boy did they have a lot to tell me. First Mrs. Geer told me that at the moment they are learning about pets. On November 13 a magician came to the class and talked on how he uses pets in his shows. The class is also planning a trip to the veteranian clinic and a man from the pet store is com- ing to the classroom. On Nov. 15 the primary children got to see Geza Farkas, a flutist who has a collection of flutes from all over the world. I'm positive they really enjoyed his performance. I also went to talk to Mrs. VandenHoogen to see what was keeping her grade six's busy, and she told me right now they are do- ing a visual novel called "The Phoenix and the Carpet." Sounds interesting doesn't it?... On Nov. 13 Mr. Lafontaine came for music, and let the kids listen to some songs he made. They also got a chance to try their hand at composing their own songs. Sounds like a lot of good things are happening in that classroom too! As you are well aware, Christmas is just around the cor- ner, and so is the Port Perry San- ta Claus Parade on Nov. 25. This year's theme for our school float is Noah's Ark, so be prepared to see the animals marching into town by twosies. As we are talking about Christmas, another important time is coming up, Advent. Ad- vent is a happy time; it's awaiting for the birth of our Savior. So, leaving on a happy note, I hope you enjoyed my article as much as I have enjoyed writing it. Have a nice day. was nice to hear her impressions of Canada. Shirley Reesor invited all to browse at the book table and drew attention to some Christmas books. With Eleanor Mahood at the piano, Grace was sung and lunch and fellowship followed. Mary Willis, Jean Ferguson, and Jean Vanwart of Beaverton led in worship, consisting of prayer, scripture from Luke 10:25-37, hymn, From Ocean Un- to Ocean, and a meditation, 'Who Is My Neighbour." A peom and prayer concluded the worship. Presbyterial Officers present spoke briefly. Connie Grundy noted that our donations to M&S are worthwhile, as the United Church is often the first to help in a disaster. Joyce Junkin referred to the February issue of the Observer and Mandate as excellent pro- gram material. She also announc- ed a special music event to be ar- ranged in the spring. Isabel Wessell would like to receive more biographical pro- files and is still lacking two church histories. Mary Winterbot- tom announced a meeting, deal- * ing with the problem of alcohol, to be held in the Anglican Church in Fenelon Falls on October 24. Orlee Wells announced that Pat Burley will be accepting the office of Youth Convenor and that there are several offices vacant. Carol Thompson distributed a report, regarding the arrival of Rev. Kwang II Lee, a missionary to this conference from Korea. &. PORT PERRY PRINCE ALBERT UNITED CHURCH Rev. D. Robert J. LePage, B.A., M. Div. Rev. Donald E. Tansley B.A. M. Div.
